moderated Zoom shortcut keys
Karen Reynolds
Hi, I was listening to a zoom meeting that was being recorded and had everyone muted. I noticed that there was a raise my hand button, however, I never could find the unmute button. Was it just not there? Or did I miss it? What is the shortcut key to toggle the mute button on and off?

Assuming Windows and the Zoom client, Alt with a is the mute/unmute toggle. However, this doesn’t always work if you are not given permission to unmute by the host.
If muting and unmuting are locked, the host will ask you to unmute. In that case, you get a popup which requires you to tab to the Unmute button.

Using Windows, its Alt + A.This is a toggle.
If you are muted upon entry to the room and recording has started or the host has started recording, you need to accept the host recording to be able to unmute yourself upon the host allowing you to unmute.
You can also unmute yourself by holding down the spacebar for the duration you are talking, this is like keying a microphone as a ham radio operator.

Hi, Karen. As Milton Ota has already brought to our attention, if the meeting is being recorded, you must consent to being recorded. This will show as a Got It button.
Once you have consented, the mute/unmute toggle is ALT plus A.

I believe so, but I could be wrong. When I know the host has started recording I get to the Got It! Button so if I have to talk I can quickly just hold the spacebar down.

Hi, Karen. In most meetings, permission to talk is not required. Pressing the Space Bar is just a quick way to briefly unmute. It's an alternate to ALT plus A to unmute and stay unmuted. The Space Bar just unmutes you as long as the Space Bar is held down.

Karen, There are definitely meetings where the host doesn’t want others to speak. I’ve been on some where you can raise your hand and the host will unmute you, but, especially if the call is being recorded and/or is a more professional presentation, they may expect you to chat in questions so they can curate and filter.

True permission is not required but to just hold down the space bar to talk, could be considered as rude. When we had a guide dog conference call with 80 participants, the presenter learned very quickly that to just let people talk or ask questions, resulted in continuous talking over people. Thus, I would suggest put up your hand to chat and waiting for the host to let you answer is far more polite. IMHO.
