Hi all,

I was just taking a required test here at work.  I’ve used this system for several years, as we are required to take several compliance tests over the course of each year.  The test is multiple choice and each question starts with a heading, then there is some text with the question, then the radio buttons for the multiple choice answers.  The layout doesn’t seen to be different,  but this is the second time I can recall where JAWS wasn’t reading the text of the question. I would hear JAWS say something like Heading 2, Question 3, then it would immediately jump to the radio button answers. I went back to the header and brough the JAWS cursor to that spot, then could read line by line to hear the text.  Out of curiosity, I turned off JAWS and launched Narrator.  While I’m not proficient with Narrator, arrowing down the page read everything as expected and I was able to take the test.  I should probably do a little more experimenting on my part before reporting this as an accessibility bug with my company training team, but wondered if anyone might have an idea why the text could be seen by Narrator and the JAWS cursor, but not the virtual cursor.  I think I toggle forms mode on an off, so I don’t think that had anything to do with it.   I don’t think I have JAWS 2022 customized in any way that would impact this. As I said, I recall this happening one other time, but these tests are sporadic, so I cannot say for sure if it was the last time I took a test.  That would be my guess, though. The tests used to read just fine, so they likely changed something in the coding.  I should have thought to go to default JAWS settings as a test.  I’ll need to find another test I can practice on, since I passed this one.

Hey.

I’ve seen a similar behaviour from one of the major survey platforms, I think.

Just curious, but did you try tabbing throught eh questions? When you do that, I bet you JAWS will speak the question. Ti’s almost like the question is something similar to alt text rather than regular text on the page. It can’t logically be alt text, but you can’t more around it the way you normally would if you want to closely examine the question. It’s a bit irritating.

JM,

I don’t know that I tried that. I need to find a test I can play with and am hoping to have a few ideas lined up to try.  I’ll write this one down.

Yeah. You need to have something to play with to figure this out. Contacting the company is definitely a good idea. Good luck.
