moderated windows mail keeps closing
Marvin Kotler
Good evening listers; first, using jaws 2021 and the latest version of windows. When trying to read messages in windows mail, the program keeps closing. Had this problem in earlier versions of windows. When I use NVDA which I do not know how to use very well, there is no problem. Just wondered if anyone else had this problem and wondered if there is a solution. Merry Christmas to all. Marv

I have had this problem for months – Mail is no longer usable with Jaws for me and I have to use Windows Mail with either NVDA or Narrator. David Griffith

I seem to be having this problem also, especially when I try to go to the folders. It seems to crash, and I have to close out and reopen it. Very frustrating!

Why don’t you guys try Thunderbird? That’s pretty reliable and pretty accessible. I’ve been using it for years.

Sorry you are having this problem but the application being talked about here is Windows Mail and not Outlook. David G.

Thunderbird is sporadically buggy with me but the main reason I will still use Windows Mail is the absolutely fantastic preview facility where simply cursoring down the inbox of messages will cause enough of the email to be read out to in most cases not need it to be opened. In the vast majority of cases I just hit the delete key after hearing the first part of the message. This ability to review messages without having to open them individually is a massive time saver if you get lots of email traffic from lists etc. I have tried cudgelling settings in both Outlook and Thunderbird but I have never managed to set up similar automatic reading of messages as is so usefully available in Windows Mail. Setting up the preview pane in Outlook simply makes it grind to a halt and you have to tab into the preview pane anyway so you might as well open the message.
The only other Mail client where I can get this efficiency with a screenreader is Apple Mail on a Mac using Voiceover, though I would be intensely interested if other options are known to people on Windows.

Hi Marvin,
I’m also using Windows 10 and JAWS 2021 latest version. I haven’t had a lot of trouble with the program closing—but it does happen on occasion. I wonder if it’s because I key too fast. Not sure if that’s it, but I’m more conscious of it now. If it doesn’t happen for you with NVDA, then I have to think it must be JAWS. Here’s what I have noticed: sometimes mail closes, but usually it is only JAWS. Often, when everything gets silent, I simply press the hot key for JAWS and it’s back and speaking the mail.

I believe Outlook has that feature too… called the viewing pane, visually using the right side of the screen and I think it is accessible.
And if it isn’t, just hit enter on the email and you have the full email in front of you; hit .esc) to close and then ‘delete key’ to delete.
I also remember that you could put the first sentence or paragraph in the column of emails, but that makes for a very long email column/index.

That is an excellent reason to use mail. I love this feature in
IOS.

It creates a column (called Message Preview in the column selection list) that, if moved to where you can stretch it in the column order, will display the message content for as many characters as you have space for in the column width. It requires moving the column to get it in to position to stretch it, though. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ~ André Gide

Yes but as I said in my original email the Outlook preview pane is actually slower to use than actually opening up the email for screenreader users. In relation to Brian’s ;s point on Message Preview I will investigate the thunderbird addon though – do you need sighted help to set it up with column assignments. David G.
