Windows 7 help

Paul Filpus <paul1009@...>

Hello listers,

I just purchased a new laptop loaded with Windows 7. I have been an XP user for years, and am attempting to learn Windows 7 from the Daisy Book files available on the FS web site. Will the Daisy Book for Windows Vista give me good information for learning to use Windows 7? If not, what else should I do?

Thanks,
Paul Filpus

Yes, for the most part they are quite similar. There are some additional features in Win 7, but to get you up and running it is similar to Vista.

The thing you have to get used to is that when you hit the windows key you are in a search box. You can type part of a name of a program or document, and you can arrow down and see the hits that Windows has found. If you don't see what you want, you can continue typing more characters to further refine the results without moving your cursor.

For example, say you want to find network connections. You can type net and start down-arrowing. If you don't find network connections, you can continue typing work and then part of the word connections and you will see the results get further defined.

The way the items are laid out when you hit the windows key are different. There are columns of different items. You can explore them by arrowing up or down in each column. But, instead of searching for shutdown, for example, I find it is easier to just startj typing the word and arrowing down. Of course, as you get more familiar, you can pin different programs that you use frequently to the start menu.
Hth,

Steve

here you go, probably everything you will need:
first there are the audio tutorials from the blind geek zone:
http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/audio.htm

second there is a zipped file of resources and text tutorial and training manuals on my grab bag site:
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com

and just below that download is my helpful notes gathered together and put in a zip file, which include the where is it's, the what they changed the name to's and "where the blazes did they put that's, along with dozens of little adjustments and "if it does this, go here and..."'s for windows 7 users:
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com

then there are some audio tutorials at blind cool tech:
www.blindcooltech.com

and here is the direct link to the microsoft web site for the article to help get you oriented to windows 7 entitled
"Accessibility-transitioning to windows 7".
It is 20 pages long, has excellent descriptions and includes a very usable
set of tables with short cut keys that we all need to know and use if we
cannot access the mouse:

Paul,
For the most part if you know your hot keys from XP you can do pretty well
with W7.
I like W7 and particularly enjoy the way it goes out to find drivers for
equipment you plug in. Really slick.
I use Office 2007 and MS Outlook for my email because i have used Outlook
for what seems forever.
The ribbons in Office 2007 are not all that bad once you take the time to
play around with them.
Some things are easier and others are a nightmare. (LOLLLOLLLOL)
