Moderated Windows 11 update this week broke notification center

Karen Reynolds

Hi,

I’ve always been able to shift tab from the desktop to get to the notification center. I’ve just noticed that since the update I ran last night I can no longer get to it. How do I fix this? I can get into the task bar but sometimes Jaws won’t read what is there either. And I’ve noticed that sometimes Jaws is reading things 3 times. Any solutions for these issues?

Windows notification are reached by pressing Windows N for notification.

I am unable to advise on Jaw’s repetitiveness.

Yep.  Shift + TAB with focus on the desktop beforehand has never gotten the Notification Center to open for me.  In many cases, it takes me straight to the Show Hidden Icons button in the system tray, but even that's not 100% consistent.

It's not that there are often not several different ways to accomplish things under Windows, but for things covered by the Windows Key shortcuts those are the most reliable to use, and generally the shortest in that they're a 2-key press.

Hi David,

Thanks. I’ve always been able to shift tab to get to the notification center or to the system tray. I can’t get to either of these this way now. And most of the time Jaws won’t even read what is on the task bar. Since programs are open, they should be there. <smile>

Any sshortcut for getting to the system tray?

Karen

Have you restarted your computer using Restart, not Shut Down?

If fast startup is on, which it is by default, over time you're almost guaranteed to get corruption in the special hibernation file it uses.  It's always worth restarting your computer using Restart, which forces a full shutdown, sets a timer, and restarts the machine and reloads Windows afresh from disk.  This often solves a proverbial "multitude of sins."

Fast startup is pretty well-hidden. Here’s how you can find it.

  1. From the start menu search edit field look for “Control Panel.” Once you find Control Panel in the search results press the enter key to open it.
  2. From within the Control Panel find Power Options and press the Enter key to open it. In most cases you can use first letter navigation so pressing the letter P may eventually find it.
  3. Using the tab key move to “Choose What the Power Buttons Do” and press Enter to open it.
  4. Next, look for the link “Change Settings That Are Currently Unavailable” and press Enter to open it.
  5. After activating this link you may receive a UAC (User Account Control” prompt where you will need to give permission to access this setting.
  6. Next, press the tab key several times until you find the check box labeled “Turn on Fast Startup” and press the space bar until it is not checked. I know that Windows says that this setting is recommended but I personally don’t recommend that this setting be enabled.
  7. If Fast Startup was enabled and you decide to disable it press the tab key until you get to the “Save Changes” button and press the space bar to activate this button.

Hope that helps.

To reprise the Taskbar shortcut keys.

Windows B System Tray

Personally I like to hear everything so like to know about hidden items.

Windows T Taskbar or use windows key plus the number row to reach each pinned item on the Taskbar. So Windows 1 will normally open File Explorer, Windows 2 opens Outlook on my system and so on.

3. Windows N for notification.

Windows D and or M to get the Desktop. Which one works seems to change depending on your situation.

Windows a is now Quick settings to get quickly to things like your WiFi settings.

Windows X  for XP will open up a list of options to run, a git like the old fashioned XP Start menu. .

Windows I for settings though personally I prefer  Control Panel still.

Hi Karen,

If your User Account Control setting is set low enough or or at zero, you won't get the prompt when turning off Fast Start.

Those other settings in this dialog are only for if you want Sleep, hibernate or lock to show in the power options dialog.

If you couldn't navigate using first letter navigation it's probably because you have the Control Panel set in Category View, and you want this to be in either Large or Smaill icon view.

To change the Control Panel view, when you first open the control panel you're on the search field, so tab 1 time and you'll probably hear, Category button.  Press the spacebar on the Categrory button to expand the options.  Use your up / down arrow keys to either Large or Small icons and press enter.  You'll now be able to use first letter navigation in the control panel by making this setting change.

Take care.  Mike. Go Dodgers.

I constantly forget that the default for Control Panel ceased to be either one of the individual icon views since that's one of the first things I change when dealing with control panel.  Thanks for pointing out that the default is the loathsome (to me) category view.

For me, it's just so much easier, and more sensible, to have all of the various "functions" under control panel arrayed as individual icons.

I recoil from any definition of the relationship between artist and audience that is predicated on the audience claiming a sense of betrayal over who someone is or isn’t outside of the context in which they’re performing. What we know about an artist’s personal identity can be interesting and even illuminating; what we are entitled to know is … nothing, basically.

Thanks For the notification shortcut key.

Should the box for show hidden icons be checked or unchecked?

And is there a shortcut key to get to the system tray?

Hi Mike,

Thank you. I changed it to small icons.

And, I’ll leave the rest of the stuff in there alone.

Take care.  Mike. Go Dodgers.

Hi David,

I found it and it was checked. I never got the piece about approving it. I also had to do a search once I had control panel open. Apparently it must be embedded under something else. I even tried p but that didn’t work. There were quite a number of other things there, but I only changed that one to see what will happen over the next day or two.

Thank you.

Karen

How do I turn fast startup off? I haven’t seen it in any of the settings I’ve looked at so far.

Karen,

Whether you show all the system tray icons is personal preference. ON my work machine, there are too many icons that would clutter my system tray, so I have those hidden and just leave out the ones I regularly need.
