Moderated Winamp Update Question

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I use Winamp to play audio and video files here, and I understand that a new updated version of the app was recently released.

I’m still using version 5.66, because it seems to work quite well for what I need.

I am willing to try the updated version, but whenever I try to do the update function via the update now option on the app, I get a Windows exception handling error message.

So, I have two questions:

1.  Is the newest version of the app accessible with Jaws, or would I be best off sticking with version 5.66?

And

2.  If the new version is accessible, does anyone have a link to the executable file?

I’m using the latest version of Jaws 2023 on a Windows 10 PC.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, Tom. The latest Winamp version is accessible, but I'd keep my old installer for Winamp 5.66 just in case you don't like the new one. The download link for the latest version is below.

Bill:

I have two questions:

1.  If I install the new version, am I correct in saying that the new version will write over the old one?

2.  Do the basic commands for playing and stopping a file, rewinding and fast-forwarding, etc. still work as normal?

3.  Are there any issues I should look out for with the new version?

Thanks!

Hi, Tom. Apparently they have pulled this version for now. Maybe they had bugs reported, or they may be going to release a new version.

All the commands work as expected in the new version, but what I don't like about it, is that they say your Winamp will stop working soon. They keep wanting you to update to the latest version. It is my opinion that they may be trying to implement some sort of fee-based structure on the program. That's why I am still using version 5.66.

Hi Tom/all,

I am using the latest version of win amp and I do not find significant differences except for some difficulty in showing titles of played items especially do not seem I can make them scroll automatically as songs change. Also, I have found that whereas in the past win amp would open straight at the main window and I could just use play and continue, if it were a book, it now reverts to something else and I need to hit alt-w twice and even then, it will start playing from the beginning of a track, not from a point I stopped and closed the program. Advice from more experienced users who use the latest version, would be greatly appreciated. In any case, here is the link to the executable file.

Just a quick note about the setUp executable in this thread on a dropbox share, it looks like a release candidate release and not a general use release.  This is likely why someone noticed it mentioning about not working at some point.

Hi Tom,

here is a Dropbox link to a version I downloaded around the end of December last year.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mlummp6bo3g0ob7/Winamp591_10029_final_full_en-us.exe?dl=1

This is a full version and works just like Winamp 5.66 as far as I'm concerned.

I am using it on my Windows 11 laptop, but it can also be used under Windows 10.

Thanks, Nermin.

I've saved this file, and will give it a try.

I hope others benefit from this as well.

I also hope that if anyone else tries the new Winamp version, you will let us know how it works in comparison to the older version 5.66.

Hi, Tom. The download link at winamp.com is working now to download the latest version of Winamp. I just tried the following link this morning, and it is working.

https://download.winamp.com/winamp/winamp_latest_full.exe

Hi, Tom. The latest Winamp version is accessible, but I'd keep my old installer for Winamp 5.66 just in case you don't like the new one. The download link for the latest version is below.

Subject: Winamp Update Question

Is it still being developed?

Most definitely being developed;
downloaded an update in the last couple of weeks, as a matter of fact.

Hi, Steven. Yes, Winamp is still being developed, and they say they will have a completely new iteration of Winamp out late this year.
