Moderated What does Split Mean?
Rick Miller
When I try to schedule a new meeting using Outlook when I am in my inbox I hit the Alt key. When I arrow down once I hear JAWS say New E-mail Split. There is no option for a new meeting. So what does Split mean?

What version of Outlook, and do you mean you are in your message list or in the folder tree?
Under Outlook 2016 I can find no way to schedule a new meeting other than ALT + H, I, E (for meeting, there are other options), from anywhere in the folder tree or message list. If a message happens to be open and you want to reply with a new meeting ALT + H, MR, pops up a new meeting request window that will be sent if you complete it and send it. I have no idea what Split would mean other than if hitting ALT alone under the version of Outlook you're using would be throwing focus on to a split button. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) It’s not lack of contact with the world off campus that leads to the liberal views common in academia — it’s being trained to think critically and practicing this craft daily as we look at the world around us that makes us the libs conservatives so dislike. ~ Eliot A. Brian, I was thinking the same thing when I was helping Rick with his question on the Zoom plug in out Outlook. I’m in Outlook 365 and when you go to the home ribbon from within your inbox, JAWS reads out the first button as “New Email split button. I thought I remembered what those were from when we first moved to the ribbon format in Microsoft, but I really don’t recall how to activate it. I’m not sure how this split button is different from just a regular button or what keystroke to use that does anything but open a new email.

Hi, Robin. Split means that the button contains more than one option. These options can usually be found by pressing the Left and Right Arrow keys, while focused on the "split" button, before the button is pressed.

Bill, That sounds like what I thought it was, but I can no longer get it to work. If I tab once to that new email button on the home ribbon, pressing right arrow moves me to the next button to the right, same as if I pressed tab. Hitting alt down arrow on the button, like a combo box doesn’t’ do anything either. I have just enough vision that I can see a little icon just to the right of the New Email button. If I left click on that, it does open a list of new options, new email, new meeting, new contact, etc.. It’s possible this is unique to my work machine and I’ll have to test at home, but it’s definitely not working as I would hope. I’m on Office 365 for enterprise here.

Hi,
pres ALT + Down ARROW or RIGHT ARROW on those buttons. I think I wrote a message about this in the morning. |

With regard to split buttons, Gene Asner discusses them at length in this tutorial:

Hi, Nermin. I am using Windows 10, Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2673). When focused on a "Split Button", ALT plus Down Arrow does nothing. Pressing Right Arrow works as expected.
