Hi all,
Whenever I open Microsoft Edge to do a search I either get breaking news alerts
or search suggestions (Amazon, Facebook and many other things) before I've even
typed anything into the search box. Before anyone asks these are not things that
I set up previously that I now want to get rid of Can anyone tell me how to stop
both of these things from happening? Using latest versions of Edge, Jaws and
Windows 11.

Hi Madison,
Perhaps someone else can tell you how to do this, but you can go into the
settings and set your start up window for Edge to come up as blank. Then it
comes up in the edit field for searching. You can even change your search
engine if you like too.

Hi, Madison. All this annoying stuff is in Settings>Privacy, search and
services, in Edge.

1. Open Edge.
2. Press ALT plus F, followed by the letter S for Settings.
3. TAB once to the settings categories, and arrow down to Privacy, Search
and Services, and press ENTER.
4. There will be several Check boxes, and you don't want them to say
checked, if you don't want to hear about them when you are in Edge.
5. The check boxes are as follows, with new ones being added in new updates,

Save time and money with Shopping in Microsoft Edge
Show opportunities to support causes and nonprofits you care about
Show travel recommendations in Microsoft Edge

The other thing you might want to turn off is also in Settings, (ALT plus F,
followed by S), under the category, Edge Bar.

Automatically open Edge bar when the computer starts

Make sure this is unchecked, or you may have all sorts of suggestions
popping up.

Thanks for allerting us that this exists.
HOpefully, someone can outline the steps to do this in -- having Edge open
blank -- as that's an attractive thing in my mind.

Thanks for this Bill; however when I go to settings the only stuff that shows up
is things about my profile, there don't seem to be any other categories. Any
idea why this might be and what I can do about it?

Hi, Madison. Yes. Open Edge. Then, Maximize Edge, by pressing ALT plus
SPACE, and arrow up to Maximize. Then try ALT plus F, followed by S. Then
tab to the categories. You should see something like,

In Edge, and every other browser I'm aware of, if you so choose you can set any home page you wish.  For myself, when I have any browser open I always have it open all of the tabs I previously had open when I closed it.  But in Edge, if you want to specify a start page, e.g., google.com or duckduckgo.com, then open Edge Settings and navigate to the Start, home, and new tabs pane.  In that pane, in the first section with the title, When Edge starts, activate the radio button for Open these pages then activate the Add a new page button as many times as you wish so that the set of pages specified are what open when you open Edge.

Step-by-step instructions:

Chromium-based Edge: Setting Home Page, Default Opening Page(s), and Search Engine

All that follows presumes you have the Chromium-based Edge open, and have done the following to open Settings:

 

1. Hit ALT,Down Arrow or ALT+F to throw focus to the Edge Menu button and expand the menu itself.

 

2. Follow that with S for settings.  This will open a tab showing the following address:  edge://settings/profiles   

This is the Edge Settings page.  One could also just open a tab and paste in the address above, but it's better to know how to get there via the menu button.

Setting a Home Page (a real home page, that is accessed via the Home button):
Once you open Edge settings, tab once (which should land you on the Profiles pane selection in the settings list - it's first), down arrow 3 times and you will land on the Start, home, & new tabs pane entry.  Hit Enter on it to get the pane itself to load. Hit TAB repeatedly until you have to focus on the toggle for Show home button, then toggle it on by hitting the space bar.  As soon as you do this, two additional radio buttons appear.  The first is New Tab Page, and this radio button is selected by default.  Directly beneath it is a second radio button for a specific page URL, announced as Enter URL radio button, which is stippled out as not accessible and rather odd to get to in that you must down arrow when you have focus on the New Tab Page radio button to gain focus on it.  TAB will not work. Once you have focus on it you can activate it, then the actual edit box for the URL you wish to enter becomes accessible, and a single TAB lands you in it to enter the URL for the page you want as a home page.   Once you've entered that URL a save button becomes active right next to it.  Tab to the Save button, activate it, and you're done.


Setting what the browser opens when you first fire it up:
Once you open Edge settings, tab once (which should land you on the Profiles pane selection in the settings list - it's first), down arrow 3 times and you will land on the Start, home, & new tabs pane entry.  Hit Enter on it to get the pane itself to load.  Hit TAB to throw focus into the On Startup Pane contents, which will be composed of three radio buttons:
Open the new tab page, Open tabs from the previous session, and Open these pages.   If you select the first or second option, you're done.  If you select the third, additional controls appear that allow you to add a list of specific pages (which could be a single page) or to set all currently open tabs as the list of pages.


Changing the Search Engine in the Chromium-based Edge Browser


(The steps start at number three, since the common steps one and two were mentioned at the outset)

3. Tab once to land on the Profiles item in the Settings tree. Down arrow once to get to the Privacy and Services item, then hit Enter to get that pane to load.

 

4. Hit Tab to throw focus into the pane.  Hit CTRL+F to bring up Find, then enter Address as your search term.  Hit Enter to run that Find.

 

5. The Address Bar entry text will be found.  Hit escape to close the search, then Hit Tab once to land on the actual button for same and activate it.

 

6. You're now in the Address bar settings, and there are three controls there, the titles of which are pretty self explanatory.  To set your default search engine in the address bar, use the setting for that.  To change your default search engine for the browser, go to the last option, Manage search engines, then:

  

             a) Tab once to land in the search box.

             b) Start typing the name of the search engine you wish to use.  If it's one of "the big ones" like Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc., it will very likely be the only search result returned, but sometimes it isn't.

             c) Hit TAB three times.  If your preferred search engine is what you've landed on move to step 7, if it isn't, then down arrow through the results until you land on the search engine you want.

 

7. Right arrow three times to land on the "More Actions" button for that search engine and activate it.

 

8.  This will bring up a pop-up menu, with "Make default" being the first item.  Since that's what you're trying to do, activate that option.

 

You're done.  You can close the settings tab.

then I realized Bill said tab. I did that and it was there.

I had trouble at first. I did alt f and then s. It seemed to put me into a
search box so I tabbed out of it and suddenly I was where I needed to be,
and I was able to down arrow to where Bill said to go.

I am running windows 10 on a laptop and the latest Jaws version.

What setting do you use for Forms Mode?  I run Forms Mode in manual mode and it seems to work in this mode more consistently from computer to computer.
 
Here's how I access the list of categories once I'm in Settings.
 
After pressing, Alt + F, then the letter, S , I down arrow to, Profiles TreeView Item..., and press enter.
 
Now down arrow to the category you want to work with and press enter.  Now tab through the various options for this category making the changes you want to make.
 
Setting changes usually take immediate affect, but I would restart Edge just to make sure.

Thanks for this Bill; however when I go to settings the only stuff that shows up is things about my profile, there don't seem to be any other categories. Any idea why this might be and what I can do about it?

Hi, Madison. All this annoying stuff is in Settings>Privacy, search and services, in Edge.

1. Open Edge.
2. Press ALT plus F, followed by the letter S for Settings.
3. TAB once to the settings categories, and arrow down to Privacy, Search and Services, and press ENTER.
4. There will be several Check boxes, and you don't want them to say checked, if you don't want to hear about them when you are in Edge.
5. The check boxes are as follows, with new ones being added in new updates,

Save time and money with Shopping in Microsoft Edge Show opportunities to support causes and nonprofits you care about Show travel recommendations in Microsoft Edge

The other thing you might want to turn off is also in Settings, (ALT plus F, followed by S), under the category, Edge Bar.

Automatically open Edge bar when the computer starts

Make sure this is unchecked, or you may have all sorts of suggestions popping up.

Whenever I open Microsoft Edge to do a search I either get breaking news alerts or search suggestions (Amazon, Facebook and many other things) before I've even typed anything into the search box. Before anyone asks these are not things that I set up previously that I now want to get rid of Can anyone tell me how to stop both of these things from happening? Using latest versions of Edge, Jaws and Windows 11.

What setting do you use for Forms Mode?  I run Forms Mode in manual mode and it seems to work in this mode more consistently from computer to computer.

 

Here's how I access the list of categories once I'm in Settings.

 

After pressing, Alt + F, then the letter, S , I down arrow to, Profiles TreeView Item..., and press enter.

 

Now down arrow to the category you want to work with and press enter.  Now tab through the various options for this category making the changes you want to make.

 

Setting changes usually take immediate affect, but I would restart Edge just to make sure.

I must say I'm having a similar difficulty getting to this area, and I've followed Bill's instructions to the letter. Edge's settings seem to work differently on different systems.

When you do the Alt F and settings, be sure to tab to get into what you want and then you can down arrow to it. I ran into the same issue as you did and then I realized Bill said tab. I did that and it was there.
