Moderated using find in notepad

I can’t get the find command in Notepad to work anymore.  I have the latest version of JAWS 2022.  It used to work a few months ago.  I don’t know what made it quit working.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Denise,
This is not a jaws command.
You just do control F.
If you are using insert with it, you are just searching the screen, and not the document.

I use control F & then press enter after typing my search term.  It doesn’t do anything except keep repeating what I typed.  I hit escape to get out of find but it doesn’t do anything either.  I have to exit & reopen the document & arrow down to what I’m looking for which takes a long time.

F3 also repeats the find, but if you cannot escape out of it, that is of little help.

Make sure, when you invoke the Find dialog, that the checkbox for Wrap around is NOT checked.

Denise,

Not much help, but I tried search with control-f and also JAWS key-control-f after reading your message with the same result. The only tip I can offer is that I got out of the dialog by pressing the alt key twice. Search would take me to a weird menu. As a result, I didn’t need to open and reopen Notepad.

So did this just start recently?

Ctrl-f or f3, search string, enter, escape – works as it always did here on Windows 10. Definitely a very necessary part of notepad. You are using the regular notepad that came with windows, right?

It started a couple of months ago.  I have Windows 11.  Yes I’m using Notepad that came with Windows.  I haven’t changed anything on my computer.

I have just tried this in Windows 11  NotePad with NVDA and cannot replicate the problem.

What happens is that when I hit control F in Notepad I et an annoying message about Windows notification and pressing F6 but if I ignore that and type in my search term, press enter,   and then press escape I am moved to the point in the document with the search term found.

This happens for me with word wrap enabled or disabled.

Denise,

Have you checked the Wrap around radio button I previously recommended in the Find dialog in Notepad?  It is not difficult to accidentally turn this on, and if it is turned on that choice is "sticky."  It won't be turned off unless you do so.

If it's on, and there's a single instance of what you're searching for in the text file, hitting F3 will simply circle back to it again and again and again.  If there is more than one, it will cycle through them then circle back to the first after it's hit the last (or vice versa if you're searchint Up rather than Down).  You stay trapped in the Find dialog until you cancel out of it or, even worse, if you close it and hit F3, you'll land on the same items again and again, without the find dialog popping up at all.

Yes I turned off the wrap around radio button.  Nothing has changed.

What, exactly, do you mean by, "It doesn't do anything except keep repeating what I typed."?

Are you saying, if you type, "flower," in the find edit box it just keeps saying flower, flower, flower?   In a quick test now in a text file I have where I searched for "parts," and there are many instances of that text, each time it was landed on NVDA said, "Found next occurrence of text?"  Is that what you're expecting, or something similar, from JAWS.

I only have JAWS such that I can use 40-minute mode and that's on a WIndows 10 machine.  My Windows 11 machine doesn't have JAWS or NVDA on it at the moment.

I have my scriptures in Notepad.  I want to go to a verse so I type 8:1 and press enter.  It just keeps saying 8:1 & when I hit escape it keeps saying 8:1.  If I type a word it doesn’t say 4 results and press enter to go to next result like it does in Word.

Since someone with Windows 11 has already said they cannot replicate this, and I can't replicate it under Windows 10, I suspect some sort of corruption in Windows, which can occur.

First, I'd give this a try:  Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8, 10 & 11

If you are not currently running Windows 11, version 22H2, then I'd suggest updating to it and seeing if that might fix the issue.

There have been some relatively small changes to Notepad under Windows 11, but they shouldn't have this effect on the Find function.  I agree that searching scripture for chapter and verse, without having a find function, would get very tedious.

Do remember, though, that until you get this fixed you can open TXT files in Microsoft Word, so if you're familiar with the find function there this could be a workaround.

What are the differences in notepad in Windows 10 and 11?

Hm. You can always just re-download notepad, if it’s gone weird somehow.

You also have wordpad at your disposal still, I believe.
