moderated Using Alt+Q in Microsoft.

Don Mauck

Hello, I use the Alt+Q key off and on in Office when I can’t remember how to get to a function such as Office Assistant.

Now that keystroke just opens a search just like CTRL+E does. I’m using

Version Details Information:

Microsoft Outlook Subscription Version 16.0.14326.21096

JAWS version 2023.2209.25.400

Current settings: Outlook.

Current application: OUTLOOK.EXE.

Active configuration: Outlook.

Current Speech and Sounds Scheme: Classic-NoReadOnly.

Microsoft Windows 11 Professional Version 21H2 (OS Build 22000.856), System Type x64

I realize I’m using a BETA of JAWS, but I’ve used NVDA and an older version of JAWS and am getting the same results. Is anyone seeing the same thing? Did this go a way and I just didn’t see that change?

I know this is a Microsoft key but I figure this is as good of place as any to start.

Don, Are you saying that you don’t get results if you type a search term?  When I hit Alt While composing this email, here is what JAWS says.

Ribbon Tabs Tab‑ expanded‑
Type to search and use the up and down arrows keys to navigate sub menu‑
Microsoft search Edit‑
Alt followed by Q
5 suggestions available. 2 in Recently Used Actions, 3 in Suggested Actions,

From here, I can type a command, such as “bold” and arrow down the options.

I’m on Microsoft Outlook Subscription Version 16.0.14326.21096 – the same as you, but I’m running the Feb. Release of JAWS.

What I get when I try typing “assistant” for example, I never get to where I find the Office Assistant for Out of office messages. That is how I’ve always found that feature since I don’t use it a lot and never added it to the Quick Access Toolbar.

I can't explain what's going on with ALT + Q, but since it appears you're using Office/Outlook 365, you should be an Automatic Replies (Out of Office) option in your accounts.

ALT + F, Tab once to get into the info pane, and make sure that the account for which you wish to send these messages is selected.  Then navigate to the Automatic Replies button and activate it.  You know the drill after that.

I'd also forgotten that unless the account is an Exchange account (outlook.com or a business/entity using Exchange) you won't have an Automatic Replies button.  If you're using something like Gmail or other IMAP or POP account, you have to set up out of office replies using Rules.

See: How to use the Out of Office or Automatic Reply in Outlook on Windows 10

Yes, I’m finding that too, I don’t know the answer though.

All the best
