Moderated Turning Off Suggestions
Mike Pietruk
I am running Windows 10 and have Jaws 2021, 2022 and 2023 on my system.
I must have inadvertenly turned on some system setting as now, each time I enter a search box in a browser or in the program box, whatever I type floods me with suggestions as to what page or website I want to go to or which program to launch. How do I get rid of this excessive flurry of suggestions and be allowed to quietly type in what I want without the offering of suggestions. Note that this happening on all versions of JAWS so I suspect it's a Win 10 system setting rather than with the screen reader itself. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks! |

need to know what browser you are using as this is a browser setting.

not just one browser but Brave, Chrome and Edge. Hence, I am guessing that it has to be some general setting rather than the browser. |

I'm racing to dinner before my wife complains everything has gone cold, but I just caught your message and did a quick Google. This page may address your problem: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/turn-search-suggestions-off-or-on-32978815-644c-4a41-9390-968af4700aba#:~:text=Turn%20off%20search%20suggestions,as%20you%20type%20check%20box. -----Original Message-----

In edge go to privacy and search and go through all the settings it is well down the listing of settings where you turn off suggestions. I am sure it is the same for the other browsers.

Thanks! Seeing the phrase "show suggestions" in your note spurred me to enter that immediately in the settings search box. I turned off a couple of things and did a similar search for search box settings and turned something there off also. So, not sure which of the setting or settings was the culprit; but now all is back to normal. I can understand why for a sighted user seeing the possibilities makes sense (and my wife appreciates those occasionally) but listening to them being rattled off while you are concentrating on typing is a distraction. |

I want to tie this thread to a discussion we had on the list a few weeks
back. Someone questioned as to why anyone would want multiple versions of JAWS on their system at the same time. Having 3 versions of JAWS at my disposal quickly showed that it wasn't a screen reader setting being the culprit. Similarily, having multiple browsers displaying the same conduct suggested it was not a specific browser setting needing tweeking. So, the Windows 10 system settings seemed to be the logical problem which turned out to be the case. |

With the demise of Window-Eyes a few years back, many of us were concerned that JAWS might be able to rest on its laurels, so to speak. But NVDA is enough of a competitor both from a cost and usability perspective that, as you point out, Vispero could not do that. And that's good for everyone -- the 2 screen reader players and us in the peanut gallery. Choice is always good. |
