Moderated Trying To Make Google Chrome My Default Internet Browser On New Lenovo Windows 11 Laptop
Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.
Sorry to come up with another question so quickly, but I’m having trouble making Google Chrome my default internet Browser on my new Lenovo Windows 11 laptop.
I tried following the instructions for forcing a browser that Brian sent out the other day, but am having trouble getting where I need to go to get this accomplished.
It simply doesn’t seem to be as easy as it was in Windows 10.
Could Brian or someone re-state the instructions as they would relate directly to Google Chrome?
Or, isn’t there a way to go into Google Chrome directly, and set it as your default browser that way?
Thanks as always for the help.

Tom,
I am repeating the instructions below that I gave in the other topic the other day. If you can indicate where you're hitting a sticking point, I'm happy to help you get past it. You would enter Chrome in the search box noted. Chrome is the only thing that should be returned. ----- Open Windows 11 Settings, Apps Pane, Default Apps item in the pane. On the Default apps pane, there are two search boxes. The first is used to associate a file type with an app, and you will NOT be using that one. The second one is the set defaults for applications search box, that's the one you will use. If you enter the name of the browser you prefer to make default in that search box, it will likely be the only thing that appears in the results as a control/button much like it did in Windows 10. Activate the button for that browser. When the App pane itself for that opens, the first thing at the top will be a label that reads, "Set {insert browser name here} as default browser," followed by the Set Default button. If you activate the Set Default button, that browser becomes your default browser. All you're doing is searching for the browser app you want as your default, activating its main control, then on its own app page activating the Set Default button. ----- -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) It’s not lack of contact with the world off campus that leads to the liberal views common in academia — it’s being trained to think critically and practicing this craft daily as we look at the world around us that makes us the libs conservatives so dislike. ~ Eliot A. I have expanded on how to get to where you need to be by breaking the first instruction into multiple steps:
1. Open Windows 11 Settings. 2. Down arrow until you are on Apps, then activate, this brings up the Apps Pane.
3. Tab Twice. In all probability you'll hear Apps on the first Tab hit, and Installed Apps on the second. Installed Apps is the first of the items in the Apps Pane.
4. Down arrow until you land on Default Apps, and activate it. At this point the Default Apps pane is presented and focus (at least for me) is automatically placed in the search box for file type. Hit Tab once and you're in the search box for default apps.
5. Enter the name of the browser you prefer to make default in that search box (Chrome, for the puropses of this answer, but it could be Edge, Brave, or whatever browser you have installed that you'd like to make the default browser). That browser will almost certainly be the only thing that appears in the results as a control/button much like it did in Windows 10. 6. Activate the button/control for that browser. When the App pane itself for that opens, the first thing at the top will be a label that reads, "Set {insert browser name here} as default browser," followed by the Set Default button. If you activate the Set Default button, that browser becomes your default browser. ----- All you're doing is searching for the browser app you want as your default, activating its main control, then on its own app page activating the Set Default button. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 22621; Office 2016, Version 16.0.15726.20188, 32-bit; Android 12 (MIUI 13) It’s not lack of contact with the world off campus that leads to the liberal views common in academia — it’s being trained to think critically and practicing this craft daily as we look at the world around us that makes us the libs conservatives so dislike. ~ Eliot A. Brian:
These expanded instructions worked perfectly.
Thanks so much!
I have saved them for future reference.

Tom,
You're quite welcome. Also remember, whether we're talking Windows 10 or 11, the search feature in settings can get you directly to where you're looking to go provided you know where that is. In this case, if when you first open settings, you type "default apps" in the search box, there are four items returned, in order in the list presented beneath: Default Apps Choose a default app for each type of file Reset default apps Set a default app Choosing the first of those 4 places you in the Default Apps pane in the search box for file types, so you are at Step 4 in my instructions. Were you to choose the 4th of those 4 options, the Default Apps pane is also shown, but you actually don't yet have focus in either of those two search boxes, and have to do the tabbing to get there. I offer these step-by-step instructions because I believe there's value in knowing where in the settings hierarchy things are located. But I use the settings search as often as not to find and go to a given setting directly rather than going through the settings hierarchy to get there. The settings search is a godsend when you can remember what a given setting you used ages ago is called, but can't for the life of you remember where it is. It's also very good about using fuzzy logic for the search results, so even "being close" with the search terms is likely to present you with the option you're looking for even if you didn't know precisely what that is. ~ Eliot A. This makes good sense, Brian, and I hope it benefits others than just me.
