Moderated Strange PDF Conversion Issue Involving Jaws
Hello, everyone, one more time.
Today must be my day for Jaws-related questions.
I just converted a Microsoft Word document to a PDF file, and used Adobe Acrobat DC to read the file. Jaws keeps saying “MC-ref graphic” between each line of the file.
I have no idea what this means, and how to get rid of it.
Interestingly, this is the first time I have seen this vehavior, and I don’t see it with several PDF files that I recently converted.
I wonder if it is something with the file itself.
Any thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

Shot in the dark here, but could it be that you have the paragraph symbols turn on in that document? I’m not sure if they would show up if you then converted to PDF. I’ve accidentally turned them on in the past.

And, even more interesting, I sent the PDF to a sighted person, and they said the file looks absolutely fine.
So, once again, I’m not sure why I’m getting the MC-REF graphic designation for this particular PDF document.

In light of your exchange with Robin, it does sound as though some code has crept into the document that JAWS doesn’t verbalize in Word but does do so when it’s a PDF. In a case like this, I’d be tempted to go back to the original Word file, copy the contents into Notepad, then copy them into a blank Word document. Then I’d redo the PDF conversion. That process usually eliminates unwanted codes and verbalizations.
It would depend on how accurate you want the file to be in terms of formatting, etc.

Well, I actually still have the original Word document which reads fine.
I was converting it to a PDF file for an individual who can’t accept Microsoft Word documents, which is why I did the conversion.
I guess I was just surprised at the extra Jaws verbeage that crept into the PDF document once it had been converted from Word.
Apparently, the visual characteristics of the file were not changed in any way.

Try a different conversion method other than the Save as PDF in MS-Word itself. Windows has Microsoft Save as PDF as a virtual printer, as a starting point. And it's entirely possible that printing that file using that virtual printer will give you a different result. There are also quite a few third party virtual printers to PDF. One that I use frequently is PDFCreator (it is free).
Every PDF converter seems to put its own spin, no matter how slight, on the final product. When one results in an unacceptable result, try another. And since many of these are virtual printers, accessibility is very seldom an issue (except, perhaps, for installing the virtual printer in the first place).

During the install, decline PDFArchitect by unchecking the checkbox for it when you reach the dialog where it's asked whether you wish to install it. Like most free software, they bundle (a practice I find loathsome, but that ship has sailed). And for people who want some automated assistance in avoiding bundled sofware that comes with the free stuff you want, take a look at Unchecky, which while not 100% effective, works very well.
