moderated strange issue when checking for Jaws updates

molly the blind tech lover

Hi everyone. I am having a weird problem with Jaws. When Jaws turns
on, it informs me that an update is available. However, I get the
following message. "The following updates are available. List view, 0
items." Pressing tab, there is a cancel button, and that's it. There
does not appear to be an actual update for Jaws. Is anyone else
experiencing this issue? I am running Windows 11, version 21h2, and
Jaws version 2022.

Hi, Curtis. If it weren't for your message and Molly's message, I would not have known about a new update. I am going to install the update on my desktop and then I am going to use the help utility and check for the update on my laptop. Molly needed to check the box to download the update and go from there. I will also listen to the podcast featuring Eric Damery.

I just did the update and sent Freedom Scientific tech support a message, ever since the beginning of the year, or somewhere around there, the installer's self voicing feature hasn't worked. I prefer to exit JAWS once the installer starts, I find that there are fewer possibilities for trouble that way.

Hi, Gene. I believe Freedom Scientific intentionally removed the self voicing installer from JAWS, because now, Narrator can be used to monitor the install.

Hmmm... I guess that's kind of in line with them dropping support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, which all had very anemic version of Narrator.

No controversy, in the past the JAWS installer was self voiced, it did not need a screen reader running to have a voice.

You are right, that is easy, what isn't easy is that I keep forgetting Narrator. :-(

The controversy arises when a person wants to have JAWS turned off during the update or installation. JAWS used to have a self-voicing installer which appears no longer to be present today. Worst case scenario, turn off JAWS, turn on Narrator, run the update. Easy peasy.

I'm confused. I just installed the new update. Throughout, I tracked the steps and progress as JAWS verbalized them.
What exactly is the controversy?

Hi, Gene. I believe Freedom Scientific intentionally removed the self voicing installer from JAWS, because now, Narrator can be used to monitor the install.

I just did the update and sent Freedom Scientific tech support a message, ever since the beginning of the year, or somewhere around there, the installer's self voicing feature hasn't worked. I prefer to exit JAWS once the installer starts, I find that there are fewer possibilities for trouble that way.

Hi, Curtis. If it weren't for your message and Molly's message, I would not have known about a new update. I am going to install the update on my desktop and then I am going to use the help utility and check for the update on my laptop. Molly needed to check the box to download the update and go from there. I will also listen to the podcast featuring Eric Damery.

Hello:

I am not experiencing this issue, but I do have Windows 10. There was an update released today. You can download it directly off of the Freedom Scientific website. Here is the direct download link.

Subject: strange issue when checking for Jaws updates

Hi everyone. I am having a weird problem with Jaws. When Jaws turns on, it informs me that an update is available. However, I get the following message. "The following updates are available. List view, 0 items." Pressing tab, there is a cancel button, and that's it. There does not appear to be an actual update for Jaws. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I am running Windows 11, version 21h2, and Jaws version 2022.

And, while using an alternate screen reader such as Narrator solves the
problem,
it catches everyone off guard and, as this thread illustrates, confuses
experienced as well as novice JAWS users a plenty.
Not a good design choice on Vispero's part.

Gene Warner

Yeah, unless I missed it, I don't think that they ever announced the change, it could have avoided the confusion or mistaking it for a technical issue.

Even though I use the semi automatic update, I always go to the Freedom Scientific web site and download the full offline installer just in case I need to do a repair.

To me, it's irrelevant whether the change was announced or not.
Most folks expect that an update to a program can be handled by the
program itself.
It may have been aanounced somewhere or in some way, but probably, if it
was even mentioned somewhere, few, if any users or new customers, would
have been aware.
And it adds an extra layer of inconvenience for an average user who, quite
obviously, most are not exactly computer
sophisticated.

Gene Warner

Those are good points. An audio clip could have been played at the beginning of the installer when no screen reader is detected telling the user that the installer's self voiced capability has been removed. For me though, the first thing I do when I get notified of an update is to go to Freedom Scientific's web site, then go to the what's new in JAWS page to see what enhancements or fixes are in the new update, then after I've read that, I continue with the update. So I do not believe that Freedom Scientific ever bothered to tell anybody that the installer is no longer self voiced.

Hi all. I had no trouble downloading and installing the latest Jaws update.
I have been using Eloquence since I migrated from Window-eyes to Jaws.
Eloquence guided me through the download and installation on one my
computers while I used the check for updates on the other computer.
Narrator was not needed. I am with Mike regarding the fact that the self
voicing feature has been removed. So what?
