Moderated Spell checker problems with Microsoft Word 2016
Laura Richardson
Hello,
Is anybody having problems with spell checking using Microsoft Word 2016. I have Jaws 2022 and Windows 10.
When I try to spell check, Jaws will not read anything past the first wordd ...... Complete silence. This problem started approximately 1 ½ months ago. I have spent many hours on the phone with Freedom Scientific and Microsoft disability with no resolution of this problem. Microsoft disability has placed an escalation and will be calling me Wednesday to further investigate this issue.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Laura:
As a work-around, have you tried using Alt F7 to find the next misspelled word? Once found, you can activate the context menu to see what your options are.
Another way to do this is to turn on the Quick Keys with JAWS Key plus z. Then, press m to find the next misspelled word. To find the next error, turn on the Quick Keys again and then press m.
Cordially,

Hi Laura,
You can try this:
ell checker is working or not. #Using Edit Registry Option For resolving this issue you need to edit the Windows registry key. If you are comfortable with editing the registry files then make use of a good registry tool or you can perform the following option. Firstly close all the applications. Then Go to Start-> Run-> regedit. Then you need to search for the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override and delete it. Then you need to restart your computer. Then check if the problem is fixed. HTH

Laura,
I experienced this problem with Word 2016 long before you did. Since upgrading to 2019 (not the latest version), spellchecker works well.
with luck, either or both of Curtis’s suggestions will work for you. In case not, I’m trying to recall my own workaround. It went something like this:
The first time Word suggested a corrected spelling, I’d accept the right answer. At that point, JAWS stayed at “Change” button but the PC focus moved to the next possible error. I’d shift-tab to the suggestions list, where JAWS would verbalize what it read. either I knew it was correct or insert-c (read context) indicated which word was in question. With luck, I could accept the suggestion.
I’d repeat this pattern until I needed to ignore a single instance or all. At that point, I’d lose my place in the “Change” area. Then I’d close spell-checker to start over again and hope that the next instance was a “change” suggestion.
If you said this is cumbersome, time-consuming and somewhat hit-and-miss, I’d agree. But if no one has an answer to you and upgrading isn’t an option, this might help. It worked surprisingly well for me for several months.
Why 2019? Because I rely on a tech guy who is rather conservative when it comes to upgrades. Others on this list are at 2021, while probably even more use the subscription 365 version. I hesitate to use a subscription model less because over time it might be more expensive than that I don’t like being upgraded before the upgrade has had time to prove itself.

Hello, Curtis,
Thank you for these suggestions. I tried them both without success.
Microsoft disability help escalated my case and called me today. They informed me they have had numerous reports of this problem with other versions of word as well and they aare “working on it”. They told me there are two ways for a “work around”. One way is to put the document onto a flash drive and spell check it in a computer with an older version of Word. The other way is to find a third party spell checker software program and download it to my computer.
Hopefully they will come up with a fix for this soon. Again, thank you for responding with your suggestions.

Although this was unsuccessful, thank you for responding with your suggestion. I Have spent a lot of hours this week with the Microsoft disability help ppeople and they inform me they are “working on this problem” and it is not a problem limited to just Word 2016. Hopefully they will find a fix for this problem sooner rather than later.

I went from Jaws 18 to 2022, I did not have any of the Jaws versions in between. I don’t know how to get Jaws 19 or 21 without spending a ton of money I don’t have. Microsoft told me there are other versions that are having the same problem.

I strongly suggest getting the subscription version of Microsoft 365, assuming you are running a current version of JAWS. A person license is roughly $70 a year and very well worth the cost. Kindly, Curtis Chong On Oct 14, 2022, at 9:45 PM, Laura Richardson <laurakr65@...> wrote:

I went from Jaws 18 to 2022, I did not have any of the Jaws versions in between. I don’t know how to get Jaws 19 or 21 without spending a ton of money I don’t have. Microsoft told me there are other versions that are having the same problem.

Laura, as I explained, I had the problem with Word 2016 but not 2019, which I installed last month. Others on this list have 2021 and don’t seem to have encountered it, either.

Hello,
Is anybody having problems with spell checking using Microsoft Word 2016.

I am running the current version of Jaws but the Microsoft case escalation tech who called me yesterday recommended that I not get that version because it has the same reported problems. I just don’t know what to do at this point except wait for Microsoft to fix this problem.

I strongly suggest getting the subscription version of Microsoft 365, assuming you are running a current version of JAWS. A person license is roughly $70 a year and very well worth the cost.
Kindly,

Thanks for the suggestion. I realize going to Word 2010 would be a downgrade but I already bought and have that version from before I got word 2016 ...... It’s just not on this computer. I will check into upgrading to Word 2019 but I’m not guaranteed I won’t have the same problem and cost is a big factor with going that route.

If you can’t get the problem fixed, perhaps an upgrade would work for you as it did for me. Word 2010 would be a downgrade.

No, not JAWS, but Word. I’m trying to suggest that although you’ve been told the problem occurs across versions of Word, I’m finding otherwise.

Hi Laura,
When I was running Microsoft Word 2016, because I was tinkering with stuff I had no business doing, this problem occurred several times. The best way I found to fix this problem, asides from the one I mentioned before, was editing the registry. But, before you do that, have you deleted the normal template for both word and outlook? The following link gives instructions as how, to do this:
the only difference from their method and my own was that the key …word/data was not the key I deleted. I deleted the “word” subkey. Microsoft word will rebuild the key and this usually repairs the spellcheck problem.

I just tested using all of the same apps that you are using. No problems spell checking a one page document with five misspelled words.
I am sorry that I do not have an answer for you except that, it should be able to work with MS 2016 no matter what just one MS tech support person told you.
Good luck on finding a cure.
