moderated seeking advice regarding web browsers
Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
hi,
Thanks to those who answered my earlier question about windows 10 versus Windows 11. I will be sticking with windows 10, thanks to your unanimous opinions! when I last used a PC, I was using Internet explorer. That is no longer an option. I am curious as to which Web browsers people recommend for best use with Jaws. Thanks in advance for any insights. Keith

Keith, While Firefox is generally a terrific browser I don't recommend using it with JAWS due to its slow performance. On four different computers I have used Firefox has never worked well with JAWS since version 57 when that browser went through some changes. Any Chromium browser should work equally well, whether we're talking about Edge, Chrome, Brave or others. I personally prefer Brave due to the fact that it is very much focused on user privacy.

I only like it more because of Chrome's odd love of crashing on this computer which I can't explain. It's a very modern i7 system with windows 10 and jaws 2021, but sometimes chrome will just exit without warning.

Here's a vote against Chrome, not because it isn't a great browser, but because it is a personal browsing history vacuum for Google. It's also far from the only Chromium based browser with sync capabilities. The Microsoft Edge browser is Chromium-based with sync as are Vivaldi and Brave, both of which have a strong privacy focus (which can cause rare issues with certain sites, so you still need to be prepared to use Edge, Chrome, or Firefox).
As far as Firefox goes, and it's not like I use a screen reader extensively and constantly with any browser, the newer versions don't seem to be having a problem with NVDA. Web browsers as a class are one of the most fluid and dynamic classes of software in existence. What may have been true one week and one dot release ago may not be true today. It's a PITA to do repeat checking over time, but that's still worth doing for browsers you've used and liked, but may have changed away from due to performance issues or other misbehaviors when using a screen reader with them. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H1, Build 19043 It is the function of creative men to perceive the relations between thoughts, or things, or forms of expression that may seem utterly different, and to be able to combine them into some new forms--the power to connect the seemingly unconnected. ~ William Plomer

On Tue, Nov 16, 2021 at 06:41 AM, Steve Nutt wrote, regarding getting to the settings for MS-Edge:
Just go to edge://settings- Or just hit ALT + F, S, which is precisely what one does when in Chrome. What's funny is that in Edge, you can even type chrome://settings and you'll be taken to edge://settings. The converse is not true in Chrome. Brave and Vivaldi both follow that "auto-translate" behavior if you happen to enter chrome://settings as well. ALT + F, S appears to be the de facto standard command to open settings in 3 of the 4 Chromium-based browsers I have on this machine. Although it should work in Vivaldi, it doesn't, they have their own shortcut mapped, which is CTRL + F12.

Hi, David. I didn't think the settings in Edge were as easy to get to as in Chrome, either, because I needed to press a "Main Menu" button, before I could get to the Settings Categories. What I discovered, Though, was that this was because Edge wasn't maximized. When I maximized Edge, I could press ALT plus F, followed by S, and the Settings Categories list was just a tab away, just as in Chrome.

Hi, James. Have you tried uninstalling Chrome completely, then reinstalling it? What I mean by completely uninstalling Chrome is this:
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
When you uninstall Chrome through either Control Panel>Programs and Features, or via Settings>Apps and Features, Windows leaves behind some folders and files that belong to Google Chrome. If you type into the "Run" dialog the following command, %userprofile%\AppData\local and remove the "Google" folder, without the quotes, you can get a completely clean reinstall of Chrome. Perhaps this could solve your Google Chrome intermittent crashing problem. Bill White billwhite92701@att.net
