moderated Seamlessly switching from JAWS to NVDA on the fly

Yep. I do realise this and even alluded to it in my comment, but it needn't
have a desktop icon or shortcut just because it's there.

discontinued feature or your current version goes screwy. I don't call that
making things complicated? Paul

Or, you know, just delete the jaws 2020 desktop shortcut before you install
j2021. Or assign it a different hotkey before you install. Gosh, people make
things seem so much complicated than they are (not you, just saying, in
general...hotkeys are just not a complicated business) As far as I know NVDA
has not dropped it. Maybe next time I update NVDA I'll delete the shortcut
first and see what happens.

They dropped it earlier than that. The trouble was if you have say
CTRL+ALT+J setup on JAWS 2020 and upgraded to 2021, the shortcut
CTRL+ALT+CTRL+ALT+J
would open JAWS 2020 not 2021. To make it open JAWS 2021, you would first
have to unallocated the keyboard shortcut to JAWS 2020, then reassign it to
JAWS 2021. That seemed to cause a lot of confusion so they stopped adding it
by default. I think NVDA have only recently dropped adding CTRL+ALT+N by
default recently though.

the properties of the shortcut on the desktop and assigning either Alt +
Control + J or, my personal preference, Control + Shift + J.

Jaws default hotkey to close Jaws is insert+f4. There is a setting that you
can make it so there is no confirmation, it just goes away. Otherwise,
there will be an OK to hit confirming you want to close Jaws.

The hotkey for NVDA is insert+q. That too has an option to have it close
without confirmation.

Normally, the default hotkey to start Jaws is Control+alt+j though that is
customizable.
NVDA defaults to Control+alt+n, but again, tha tis customizable.

Hi,

I sometimes switch over to NVDA from JAWS, in order to determine how it
deals with something that jaws is struggling with. But the process to do so
is slightly cumbersome. It requires going to desktop, turning off jaws,
turning on nvda and then going back to where I was.

Is there a way to switch on the fly? Or at least to turn JAWS and NVDA on

Me. This why I know exactly what version I am running, don't have to bother with different hotkeys or yet more unnecessary desktop icons (and you sometimes don't know where those are or how many times to hit j to get the one you want). It takes less than a second for me to type "jaws2020" or whatever.

Hi.

I think a problem with having a hot key automatically installed for JAWS is the different versions on a PC could be confused. I can picture someone invoking a version of JAWS, doing a lot of modifications for it to work with programs. Then they reboot, and JAWS starts. They try to use the modifications they made, and they don't work. After much frustration and messages to lists, it is discovered a different version of JAWS was used.

Also, for those who recommend the INSERT key be used for JAWS commands, not all keyboards have that key on them. It's why the laptop layout is there.

Just some thoughts.

Or, you know, just delete the jaws 2020 desktop shortcut before you install
j2021. Or assign it a different hotkey before you install. Gosh, people make
things seem so much complicated than they are (not you, just saying, in

You need never go to the desktop to accomplish what you want.

Or, you know, just delete the jaws 2020 desktop shortcut before you
install j2021. Or assign it a different hotkey before you install.
Gosh, people make things seem so much complicated than they are (not
you, just saying, in general...hotkeys are just not a complicated
business) As far as I know NVDA has not dropped it. Maybe next time I
update NVDA I'll delete the shortcut first and see what happens.

They dropped it earlier than that. The trouble was if you have say
CTRL+ALT+J setup on JAWS 2020 and upgraded to 2021, the shortcut
CTRL+ALT+CTRL+ALT+J
would open JAWS 2020 not 2021. To make it open JAWS 2021, you would
first have to unallocated the keyboard shortcut to JAWS 2020, then
reassign it to JAWS 2021. That seemed to cause a lot of confusion so
they stopped adding it by default. I think NVDA have only recently
dropped adding CTRL+ALT+N by default recently though.

Jaws default hotkey to close Jaws is insert+f4. There is a setting
that you can make it so there is no confirmation, it just goes away.
Otherwise, there will be an OK to hit confirming you want to close Jaws.

The hotkey for NVDA is insert+q. That too has an option to have it
close without confirmation.

Normally, the default hotkey to start Jaws is Control+alt+j though
that is customizable.
NVDA defaults to Control+alt+n, but again, tha tis customizable.

You need never go to the desktop to accomplish what you want.

Hi,

I sometimes switch over to NVDA from JAWS, in order to determine how
it deals with something that jaws is struggling with. But the process
to do so is slightly cumbersome. It requires going to desktop, turning
off jaws, turning on nvda and then going back to where I was.

Is there a way to switch on the fly? Or at least to turn JAWS and NVDA
on and off?

I like the hotkey for the current version of JAWS. I'll only run the JAWS from the Run Command if I need to use a specific feature in an older version. At the end of the day the latest JAWS meets my day-to-day needs. It is rare that I need to open an older version. Paul

Mike B.

Hi All,

You can try assigning the shortcut keystroke from a different Jaws icon, and I believe it will solve anyone's disappearing keystroke problem.  I assign my
pin to Taskbar shortcut and any Jaws version I want to assign a hot key keystroke to, from this Jaws icon and never have to mess with it after a Jaws build update.  Try the following:
1. Open the Start menu, navigate to the Programs folder and open it.

2. Use first letter navigation to the version of Jaws you want to assign the shortcut keystroke to.  Press the letter, J, until you reach JAWS2018, for example.

3. With the preferred version of JAWS highlighted Press enter or right arrow to open, up or down arrow to, JAWS, and this is the icon that you want to use for creating the shortcut keystroke.

4. So, with the JAWS icon highlighted press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS properties, or press the applications key or Shift + F10 to open the context menu, and press enter on properties.

5. Assign your keystroke, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay, and press Enter.

Now you shouldn't have any more problems with assigned keystrokes getting deleted.

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!
Sennt from my iBarstool.
