For the past two years I have had a hp 9010 series printer/scanner. Three months ago, my Open Book app could not recognize the scanner. I called hp accessibility unit to do a screen share but the issue continued. Does anyone know of any scan/read software comparable to Open Book?

Hello: Before I can possibly help with this, I would need more information. - For how long has this problem been going on?
- What has changed? Certainly, OpenBook was not updated; it hasn’t been updated for quite a while now.
- Can other programs on the computer scan using your HP?
Thank you. Kindly, Curtis Chong

I don't know of an alternative for open book, but your problem sounds like a new driver may have been installed behind your back, and the new driver isn't friendly with open book.
This is a perfect example of why I think that automatic updates is always a bad idea. Whenever possible I disable such updaters. It's my computer and I will be the one who decides if and when any software on my computer needs updating. Don't fix what isn't broken.

K Dash NFB reader has an app for windows 10 that works with scanners. Not as robust as open book but very good.

Check in OpenBook settings to see if, somehow, the scanner you are using is no longer selected. Sometimes when we are looking around in the settings we accidently forget to leave the settings the way we found them. Ms. EMK

Hi Larry, Openbook has gotten extremely finicky lately. Bummer, because it is a very useful tool. Changes to the HP driver could have caused the problem. Changes to drivers or other items in Windows could do the same. If you haven’t changed anything, then it is most likely one of these. I’ve got some options if you want to stay with Openbook. First, try unplugging and replugging in the scanner, the connection at the scanner and the one at the computer. It is possible something jarred loose. Openbook likes nice tight connects where Windows might not care so much. Second, someone suggested making sure the scanner you have is chosen in Openbook. Third, you can choose another scanner. FS makes one that stand up over the page and scans that way. It works with both Jaws and Openbook. If mine goes out, this is what I’m planning to get instead of replacing Openbook. https://www.freedomscientific.com/products/lowvision/pearl/ And last when you were on the phone with HP, did they test it so that it works with their scan software? It is usually installed when the scanner is set up, even if you have Openbook. Based on your answers, I might have more suggestions. I know one issue I’m having is that I have to turn on the computer, put it to sleep, turn on the scanner, wake up the computer before I can scan. This has been going on since I got my laptop-about 2 years or so. I at least can figure it out. Hmmm, I went to Windows 11 last weekend. I should test that now. Karen

I think you are referring to their Pearl Document Camera. I have one and it is a nice document camera with some nice features.
The only thing I didn't like about it is if you scan your mail before opening it to make sure it is addressed to you the camera has trouble reading through those plastic windows where your address shows.
That is why mine is currently sitting on a closet shelf and my daily use scanner is a flat bed scanner.

Hi Jean, That is the one. A shame it is sitting on the shelf unused. Some day I want to get one.
Since I read books with mine, I wouldn't have that problem. Thanks for letting me know. Hmmm, I wonder if tilting the envelope slightly would have helped.

Well, I got it mostly for when I am traveling because it does fold up rather nicely.
I would have switched to it full time if it hadn't been for the problem with reading through those windowed envelopes.

Hi, For basic scanning, the Convenient OCR feature of JAWS does a decent job, sometimes better than Open Book. alternatively, if you need a full-featured, robust blindness-oriented scanning and reading package, Kurzweil 1000 is very good and it's still being updated. OpenBook hasn't been updated in at least ten years and it's likely that it will never be updated.

JAWS itself will do the job, if you don't need to batch scan.
Insert Space, then O, then A, for Acquire Image. It should talk directly to your scanner.

The hp printer worked well for 2 years. An hp tech asked me to set up a wireless connect as my default. This caused a problem with Open Book; so, the wireless default was removed and I now have only a usb connection and it works well. Thanks for your advice.
