Moderated safe to eject is not speaking

I’m running latest Windows 11 and Jaws. I’ve noticed that since upgrading to Windows 11 Jaws no longer speaks that it is safe to remove a thumb drive. It makes a sound for the SD cards but doesn’t say anything. Where do I go to get this changed so Jaws will tell me it is safe to remove the drive?

I am getting this problem too. At first I thought it was a momentary glitch, but now that I see that someone else has this problem too, now I'm not so sure.

It was working with 10, then I upgraded to 11 and it doesn't even make a sound, but less speak that it is ready to eject.

Well if you copy and paste, and unless a file is very large, if they are all
there, it's safe to eject.

I wonder if there is a msg on screen or just a visual affirmation, or
nothing at all.
The question is whether there is no verbal indication because there is no
corresponding msg being displayed on screen.

K0LNY

And the message does not display if the OS has scanned the card once before
and it was "safely" ejected.
The OS remembers volumes it has scanned.

Hi,

I got these steps from the Microsoft Disability Help Desk
( 800 936 5900 )

To activate the ( safe to remove usb drive prompt )

in settings ( windows i )

tab and down arrow to personalization and press Enter
tab until it gets to Background and down arrow to Taskbar and press Enter
Press Tab until it gets you to Taskbar corner overflow and press Enter

** Tab to go to Windows Explorer for the USB drive and press spacebar to turn it on

I had Microsoft walk me through the settings
I also had Microsoft set the setting for me.

When we tested the setting by inserting a usb drive,
pressing the application key
choosing eject
( the Microsoft tech said that he could see the notification
( safe to remove usb drive )
however I could not hear Jaws say the prompt that it was safe to remove the usb drive.

So, in my experience,

have Microsoft check and enable the setting for you
once Microsoft has made the setting,
do not forget to test the setting while the Microsoft tech is still on the phone

press the application key
choose eject from the list of options

make sure they can see that the
( safe to remove usb drive has appeared on the screen )

try this more than once with the Microsoft tech on the phone
( in my case they could see the prompt, however I could not hear Jaws speak the prompt )
hopefully for you, you will be able to hear the prompt.

I talked it over with the Microsoft tech
it takes about one second from the time I choose
eject from the list
for the message / prompt to appear

If you press the application key
choose eject from the list
wait about one to two seconds
it is now safe to remove the drive

hth,

TJ

Hi Karen,

Here are the steps.

1. A. If you want to change this setting only for a particular application open the Settings Center by invoking the, Insert + 6, on the number row keystroke
while in the application / program you want to work with.
B. If you want to change this setting for all application open the Settings Center by invoking the, Insert + 6, on the number row keystroke, then press,

control, shift + D, to open Settings Center default all applications.

2. Down arrow to, Speech Verboscity closed and right arrow to open.

3. Down arrow 1 time and you'll hear, Verboscity level ... , the ... will be your verboscity level.  It's probably on Beginner highest.  This is important
to know for step #5 so you know what level to open and work with.

4. Down arrow 1 time to, Configure Verboscity Level closed, and right arrow to open.

5. Down arrow to the level you're running and press the spacebar.  Note:  Do Not press enter, press the spacebar!  If you press enter you'll get kicked
out of the Settings Center because Jaws will think you're done in here and close.

6. After pressing the spacebar you'll be in a list of items that can be checked or unchecked to turn on or off.  Smart Help is #21 and
Toasts is #24.

7. After or if you make any changes tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar and tab to, Okay and press the spacebar or enter
to save your changes and close.

Also the new way to navigate the System Tray for Win11 22H2 is to press, Windows key + B, as in boy, now right arrow to find system tray icons if down arrowing isn't working, or at least this is what works for me.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

I was doing fine until I got to Taskbar corner overflow. It doesn’t exist on my laptop, or it is somewhere else.

If you press the application key
choose eject from the list
wait about one to two seconds
it is now safe to remove the drive

hth,

TJ

After pressing enter on the eject button I have to Alt + Tab sometimes to hear the safe to eject message.  Also there might be another setting to change for Jaws to read the Toast messages, but I need to look for
that and get back to you.

Also you can arrange the order in which the icons show in the system tray, but I need to write different steps for this.

On the above press the spacebar to expand and tab 1 time into the list, down arrow to, Safell Remove..., tab one time to the on / off button and press the spacebar to turn this on.  If you don't need to make any more changes just press, Alt + F4, to close.  There isn't any apply or okay buttons in this dialog.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Now I’m getting stuck sooner. There isn’t  this step after personalization for me.

Now tab to, Other System Tray Icons collapsed, show all settings button, and press the spacebar to expand this.

I’m beginning to think it doesn’t exist for me. <smile>

I was doing fine until I got to Taskbar corner overflow. It doesn’t exist on my laptop, or it is somewhere else.

If you press the application key
choose eject from the list
wait about one to two seconds
it is now safe to remove the drive

hth,

TJ

I've got that part figured out. Thought I would ask here to see if anyone knows. Might be time for a phone call to Microsoft.

Well if you copy and paste, and unless a file is very large, if they are all there, it's safe to eject.

Guess I'm not most people. I want it to tell me when it is safe to pull it out.

I'd say it is a feature, not a problem.
Most people don't like that canned message.
I ignore it.

I am getting this problem too. At first I thought it was a momentary
glitch, but now that I see that someone else has this problem too, now
I'm not so sure.
