Moderated Replacement for Thunderbird?
Gene Warner
Hi everyone!
I recently upgraded Thunderbird to version 102 from version91 and wow! I did not like the changes at all, in fact I just finished downgrading it back to version 91. The problem now is that I won't be getting any more updates, especially any security fixes that might come up. So now I am in the hunt for something to replace it. I don't need the kitchen sink thrown at me like Outlook does. I just need a simple and accessible email client that can do IMAP. I use GMail and want to keep my email on the server. Any recommendations? I was also using Thunderbird's RSS capability to monitor the podcasts for new episodes to download on my Victor Reader since I have it set up for manual downloading of podcast episodes, but that is for another topic. Thanks! Gene... |

Hmmm, I'm running 102, and it seems basically the same to me. What problems were you having?

First there was this new Spaces button in the tab order that I would have preferred to be able to remove as I did not need it, but I could live with that.

What really did it for and caused me to go back to 91 was that the address book was completely different, so different that it wasn't a matter of just getting used to it, I found it much more difficult to manage. The simple list of contacts was gone, it was replaced with a drop down list. So I looked for options that might restore the address book to what I preferred, but could not find anything. Gene... What I can't figure out is why anyone who is not a typical beta user is upgrading to Thunderbird 102. From the noted page: Thunderbird version 102.0 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 91 or earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier versions.
There could be quite a few changes before it hits the release channel. Those choosing to use beta software need to understand what that entails. I still have 91.11.0 and a check for updates from the help menu clearly indicates that's the latest version on the release channel. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. Then 102 should be marked as a beta and not an official release which is how it is marked in their releases directory.

It's simple, really, if you are not being offered an update via the installed version, which is on the release channel, then anything you download is NOT a production release. This is your doing. If you don't have anything nice to say, you should try saying nothing at all.

I never blamed anyone for my downloading and installing of version 102. And I took care of my mistake by downgrading. So I would say that I owned my mistake and fixed it! So stop putting words in my mouth. You should take your own advice and own what comes out of your mouth! Gene... On 7/10/2022 8:33 PM, Brian Vogel wrote:

Hi, Brian. Gene didn't have to deflect anything. Your aim is horrible. Maybe we're the ones who are sighted, and maybe you need cataract surgery ... on your mind!

Besides, who is to blame is beside the point. Whether I saw it now by mistakenly downloading 102 before I should have or whether I waited until Mozilla offered it through the update channel, the point was that I could see where Thunderbird was going and I didn't like it, so it is time to look for something to replace it with.

Throwing out blame was pointless and accomplished nothing. Now can we just drop it and get back to the original question? Gene... On 7/10/2022 10:11 PM, Bill White wrote:

Maybe its the settings I use but I find that in my case I'm just the opposite. I am much more efficient with an email client than with the GMail web site.

Its a pity that the old Outlook Express is no more. Although it had news group access that I didn't need, its email client was simple and easy and did everything I needed from an email client. There something called OE classic but it is completely inaccessible through a screen reader, or at least it was the last time I tried it. https://www.oeclassic.com Gene... Different strokes, I guess. I just messed with the address book, and for what little use I make of it, I guess it will be fine. Most of what I need to do is go delete old stuff, and other than a little extra tabbing around, it is good enough.

http://www.rimarts.co.jp/becky.htm I came from Becky to t-bird, but there isn't any good and accessibility reasoning I used to keep with t-bird. Becky's filters are somewhat easier to use, and Becky is not free except the first 40 days, and if you wish the archive I'll make a link for you. There is a specialized help file for Becky, like Audacity, for example, which is quite comprehensive. On 7/10/2022 7:37 PM, Chris Hill wrote:

The part I like about Tbird is that it is simple to make a backup copy of the roaming, Thunderbird folder or just the profiles folder. Having a copy of the profiles folder backed up every couple of weeks, has got me out of trouble numerous times. . Maybe other email clients also have this feature but Outlook 2013 certainly did not which is why that client is not used any more by me. Tom On 11/07/2022 2:08 pm, Curtis Delzer wrote:

You can copy Becky's "everything" folder which is under the main "my documents folder by default.

Hi Brian,
TB 102 is a regular version, no beta. At least I am not on any beta programme and was offered that version as an update from TB 91. Regards, Nermin |

Well, good luck finding a replacement for Thunderbird, because if you are looking for a free email client that offers comparable accessibility and features, you will have a tough time finding one. You could switch to the Windows 10 Mail app, but if you didn't like Thunderbird, you will almost certainly hate, hate, hate this email client. Your only other option would be Outlook, which of course, isn't free, or some other paid client like Becky's Email, which I am not familiar with. Happy searching.
