Moderated Question On Adobe Acrobat Reader
Hello, everyone.
As some of you may remember, I’m setting up a new Windows 11 laptop here.
When I got the laptop, I asked that my technical support help install Adobe Acrobat DC on this computer for easy PDF reading.
However, I think they installed the plain Adobe Acrobat app, not Adobe Acrobat DC.
How can I tell if this is true?
And, can someone send me a link for Adobe Acrobat DC?
When I try to open PDF files, I don’t get the usual screen which asks me how I want to read the file, and even if I open PDF files, I find reading to be quite difficult.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, Tom. When I look at the title for Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, it says the following:
Adobe Acrobat Reader (64-bit)
One trick for causing Adobe Reader DC to bring up the dialog for Assistive software is to press CONTROL plus K, for Preferences. Once Preferences comes up, press ESCAPE to close it, and the assistive software dialog should come up so you can choose how to open your pdf file.

Bill:
When I call up the Adobe program, it only says Adobe Acrobat, not Adobe Acrobat DC.
Do you have a link to the executable file for Adobe Acrobat DC?
I’m thinking that might be part of my issue here.
I’m traveling and at a conference now, so won’t be able to do much until I get back home, but this is something I’m going to need to fix fairly soon, since I am getting more and more PDF files lately.

Hi Tom,
If you are using JAWS just hit insert control V and it will tell you. The icon says Acrobat Reader but when you check the version with insert control V it will tell you if it is the DC

Bill:
Possibly a correction here.
I just opened up a PDF I received here, and it does say Adobe Acrobat 64-bit, so perhaps I do have Adobe Acrobat DC.
Also, I did a mouse click, and was taken to a dialog which asked me how to read the document, and I checked Read inferred order from document.
I checked this box, and now the file comes up.
I now wonder how I can get back to the reading choice preferences dialog, since when I do a control K, I’m taken to another unrelated set of options.

Ron:
When I hit Jaws control V when accessing Adobe Acrobat via shell:appsfolder, I get a read-out of my Windows 11 system parameters, nothing about Adobe Acrobat DC.
I’m using a Lenovo laptop here on Windows 11 with the latest version of Jaws. I have Jaws in laptop mode, so use the shift lock as my Jaws or insert key.

You can usually get a programme’s version number from the about page, which is in the help menu, usually at the bottom. Or else, you can retrieve it from its properties. If you go to the programme’s folder and find its main executable file, access the properties with alt-enter, go to the details tab, and the version number is down a few entries in the list.

Hi Tom,
Mine says Adobe Reader on the desk top and the same as Bill when I use the jaws cursor and go up and read the title at the top. I know for a fact that mine is exactly what you are wanting to have.
The difference between the free version and the paid version is the DC-cloud storage. If you choose the free version it will not provide you with the cloud storage and extra features that the paid version does.
So, the question is do you have the free version or did you pay for the professional/business version?
And if you put “Adobe Reader DC” in a google search the first search that comes up is the one to download.
As for getting it to pop up a box every time you open a pdf, Open a pdf. Go to Edit, up arrow to accessibility, right arrow to change reading options and press enter. Make the changes you want and make sure that the checkbox to don’t show this box again is not checked and start it on an open pdf.
I’ve also had more trouble with Windows 11, latest Jaws and Adobe, although there is an update out which I just installed, so maybe that will help or break more stuff for me too.

Hi Ron,
Thanks. I did this and although everything else says Adobe Reader or Adobe Reader 64 bit, here is what doing this says. I pulled it from history.
Adobe Acrobat DC Version 23.1.20064.0
So I’m running the DC version, but the other areas don’t say I am.

Subject: Question On Adobe Acrobat Reader
