moderated Problem with my WiFi
Dave Durber
Hello everyone:
If my problem is inappropriate for this list,
please let me know where I can go to get help to resolve it.
We have a DELL PC computer. It is running the
latest version of Windows 10. the latest version of JAWS is also
installed.
Recently, I had to move the computer from one roon
to another room. In the original location, the connection to the network and the
internet, was through an ethernet connection, and I had very few problems. In
the new location, I connected the USB Wifi dongle and installed the software and
selected my ISP's router. I chose to have the computer connect automatically to
other devices on the network.
My problem is, each time I turn on the computer,
and try to access the internet, retrieve my email or, connect to another
computer on the network, I get the message that there are no networks
available. However, I have checked the setting to have the computer connect to
the router automatically, when the system is in range, but still the system does
not connect the the router each time I start the computer.
Any and all suggestions will be very much
appreciated.

Dave,
If a long distance, buy an extender from places as Best Buy. Walls and going from one floor to another will cause such issues.

Power line adapters allow you to connect to ethernet using your electric wiring. Another thought is to get a different wi-fi adapter, sounds like what you bought wasn't any good.

I agree, try a better adapter and/or go for a meshed networking solution. Extenders will resolve a connection issue, but will sacrifice network speed dramaticaly.

Dave, perhaps you could give more details about the router, the number of rooms away from the router, and even what kind of building?

Is it two stories, old lath and plaster or newer construction?
House or apartment?
All this can impact the Wi-Fi signal.

Dave,
I am not sure who your internet provider is. I have AT&T. Their gateway (modem/router combination) is frankly just barely functional. I had problems connecting to wifi throughout my 2-story house. What dramatically helped this situation was to turn off the router function of the AT&T gateway and connect it to a 3rd party router. Since then we have had very few problems with wifi. I am not sure about your laptop not automatically connecting via the USB bondgle.

Rick:
The distance from the router to the new location of
the computer, is about20 feet and the router and the computer are on the same
level.

Chris:
The router is by the window in the back room on the
ground floor. I have a computer in the front bedroom on the floor above. the 2
computers are using the same make an model of wifi wireless dongle. I have no
such problem with the computer in the upstairs bedroom. The upstairs computer
connects to the other computers on the network and the internet, with no
problem.

It is a brick-built, 2-story house built in 1921. the dividing walls are of a solid
construction. The fact that the walls are solid, has no effect on the computer
in the upstairs front bedroom.

Dave,
Try swapping the dongles, just to be that the new one isn't defective. Pat Byrne

Well, the floors/ceiling will not be as solid as the walls. But, the suggestion to try swapping dongles sounds like a good trouble shooting tip if you haven’t done that.

Hi Dave,
I've never set mine to connect automatically, if
I'm thinking of the same setting you are.
The first thing to do is to look for available
networks and find the one you want to connect to, and then enter on connect, and
then enter the SSID and password for your WIFI.

Wifi usb adapters are a crap shoot. If it needs to be manually reconnected, I'd junk it and get something different, it doesn't sound to me like a bad connection issue, it sounds like a junk driver that doesn't have enough sense to reconnect on startup.

I think that the connect automatically is for when
your computer is connected via cable, not for WIFI.
When WIFI gets connected, it will be the LAN that
is always connected.

No, the connect automatically will save the wi-fi password and connect to that network whenever it is in range. If it doesn't do so, the driver is junk.

Dave,
To connect, I go to my task bar with Windows + B
and arrow to Internet connections and enter on it and connect to a network, and
select one and enter my credentials.
I don't know if you were referring to the type of
Internet connection settings where it offers LAN that is always connected or DSL
or LAN where you have to enter credentials.
That is the one that I never change from always
connected to LAN.
Yes, on the WIFI settings, you want to connect
automatically.
Did you get the opportunity to enter the SSID and
password?
If not, that may be the problem.

sounds more like a network config issue or a bad adapter. 20ft.
is not very far. Even for a cheap USB dongle. I would try
resetting the network settings in control panel. If that doesn't
work then try a new adapter. If you are comfortable with
installing PCI cards, I would get a PCI-E WiFi card they are much
better than USB ones.

I have done that but, the problem stays with the DELL computer, therefore, I am fairly certain it is a problem with network settings in Windows 10 for that computer. Dave
