Amir Shah
Hi my name is Amir shah, and I am using jaws 2021 with my new laptop del computer.
I am having a problem with my computer. When I turn on my computer sometime, my Jaws will stop talking when I am on the desktop. Also when I am on zoom it says that the zoom is not responding, And it happens when I am using openbook. When i go and lonch openbook it works, but when I am constily scan something than it does not work. Do you guys know if is a problem with my jaws 2021? Do I need to update my jaws to 2023? Please let me know. |

Hey Amir. It probably isn’t JAWS. 2021 isn’t that old, and it generally doesn’t make other programmes freeze. You should give the operating system you are using though. The “not responding” message generally suggests that a lot of system resources are being used, and so the programme isn’t getting enough processor time to accomplish what it needs to accomplish. I would look into this computer, and see what is running in the background. Try to eliminate some things. Also, when asking a question like this, it’s good to include some more information. How much ram do you have? Are you using an SSD (slid state drive)? Is this actually a really new computer or did you get a refurbished machine or in other way used one from somewhere? It’s impossible to suggest what might be causing this problem without more knowledge. Still, you can be reasonably sure that a JAWS update won’t fix the problem, I think. If you want to test this, try running Narrator for a while and see if things still freeze up.

I suspect that it is not something wrong with your JAWS. More likely, it is something to do with having a new laptop. I would first try uninstalling all unnecessary or unwanted applications “bloatware” like antivirus software (e.g., McAfee antivirus). You only need Windows Security. Also uninstall other “free” trial-subscription applications that you do not want or use. Then, see what applications are launching at startup such as Teams, and all other unwanted or unnecessary applications. Generally, uninstall all unnecessary applications and minimize all applications that launch at startup. Most likely, there are some applications that are “killing” JAWS. When you buy a new computer, typically they come with a lot of pre-installed applications that are junk (“bloatware”).

Is that new laptop running Windows 11?
If it is, I would update your JAWS to 2023.

Hi, These are hard to trouble shoot. I would not just go and uninstall programs. You can limit what programs run at start up without un installing them. You can try doing this one by one to see which ones might be causing the issue. You can find the programs running at start up under settings and start up. Also whatever anti virus you choose to use is not the problem just be sure only one anti virus program is running. Your symptoms indicate there may be a conflict with JAWS and Open Book. Often JAWS should be installed after Open book as JAWS uses newer OCR engine than is installed for Openbook. Sometimes with older versions of JAWS if JAWS is installed first and then Open book then the Open book program does not operate properly.
Don’t get discouraged most of all. May take a little time but you will find the gremlin.

Actually, the JAWS release notes specifically mention an issue with the Dell sound drivers and JAWS being fixed. You should either disable this driver or get JAWS 2023.
Here is the relevant section from the release notes: Solution for Dell Waves Max Audio IssuesChanges were made in the Eloquence, Vocalizer Expressive, and Microsoft Mobile speech synthesizer drivers to fix increased memory usage issues caused by Waves Max audio. This application is often used on Dell computers. If you previously disabled the Waves Max application to resolve these performance issues , you can now reenable it. This is only necessary if you want your computer to automatically begin using a specific audio output device as soon as you connect it, such as headphones. |

Hi Amir, Definitely disable Waves Max at startup. I too have a Dell laptop and was having terrible problems with JAWS suddenly going silent and not knowing why. This was fixed with JAWS 2023, but not with earlier versions. To disable apps at startup, do the following: 1. Press the Windows key to open the Start menu search box. 2. Type in the first few letters of “start up apps, system settings” until you hear it, and then press Enter. 3. Tab through the various app buttons, pressing the Spacebar to toggle them on and off as appropriate. Toggle off Waves Max. 4. Press Alt F4 when finished (there is no OK button). There is a very good chance this will fix your problems. Even though I have JAWS 2023, I have never reenabled that app, and don’t think I have lost anything. David |
