Moderated Problem using Bard, on the PC.

Good morning everyone,

I’m writing too ask the following question as it  relates too using Bard on a PC computer.  Using the latest Jaws and windows 10, Whenever I type a book in the search field and press the enter key,  The search results don’t come up for the book,.  It just seems too freeze up, and I can’t go further.  I did check the check box, too have all my audio books displayed in the English  language, But that doesn’t resolve the issue that I’m trying too describe here.

Is anyone that uses bard on a PC encountering this issue?

Al,

Two thoughts:

A few times, I’ve noticed that when I think I’m typing in the book search edit field, I’ve somehow landed in the combo box of languages. As I recall, a shift-tab takes me out of it and back into the edit field. I emphasize that I don’t realize this has happened until I get frustrated and start pressing arrow keys.

Second, be sure you’re allowing some time to pass before results come up. BARD can move quite slowly.

Al,
I've not had that problem.  Win10 and JFW 2021.
Adrian's thought about the proper field could be an answer.

Hi, Al. Yes. It's a problem with the BARD website. sometimes the booklists don't come up until the gateway times out. I've written to them about this giving them the errors, but this seems to keep happening. They might fix it for a day or so, but then it goes back to the same old sluggish behavior.

I actually had this happen just last night.

My solution was to shut down my PC and re-boot, after which my log-in went fine, and the issue went away.

I’m using the latest version of Jaws and a Windows 10 PC here.

Hi Al,

This is a known issue, has been for awhile. They say they are working on it. Try putting just a few words of the title in the search. That seems to work better. The same problem occurs when looking through titles, press enter on a title and enter on the author. There is a gateway timeout on that one too if there are very many books by that author.

I’m with Bill. The BARD website is obviously having issues this weekend as I’m experiencing the same delays when searching for book titles as others have posted. In fact, I just did a valid search and received the following error:

Bad gateway Error code 502

Visit cloudflare.com for more information.

2022-09-04 17:06:32 UTC

I know BARD is in process of changing some things regarding login procedures and acceptable passwords and I suspect that might be a contributing factor regarding these problems.

Given your explanation, and even if it's a known issue, given the
bureaucracy involved, getting anything fixed is probably a super complex
process.
So, the work around you mentioned, and other suggestion made in this
deiscussion,
is the way to handle it.
And Bard seems to be slow in downloads for as long as I can remember.
Don't use BARD when one's patience is at a minimum.

Hi Mike,
The problem was not there a year or so ago. I've asked about it twice in the
past year and they keep saying they are working on it. Knowing computers,
issues with them, and trying to keep things secure, plus as someone said
trying to set things up for two factor authentication in the future, this is
the best thing I've come up with to work around the issue. You can write to
them yourself at NLSDownload <NLSDownload@...> and ask about it. Perhaps
they have more information since I wrote earlier in the summer.

hmmm!!

When NLS introduces two factor authentification, I can only imagine the
problems folks might have. I believe what you say about them working on
all of the issues folks have, but for a government agency to fix anything
goes far both identifying the problem and the fix. The people working the
site know the fixes; what they cannot get around is getting the approvals
required to do things. If someone works lfor a government agency, they
cannot just go ahead on their own and take care of something. I really
sympathize for individuals working in the field for a government agency as
they likely are continually frustrated in how they personally cannot
resolve things like in the private sector. I thank God that I have never
needed to seek government employment and try keeping my needing to deal
with an agency to an absolute minimum.
I don't blame the individuals themselves; but the bureaucracy they have to
deal with.

The issue Al raised was related to searches.
I would expect that the part of Bard you used -- and which I use most
often --
expects as it should most of the time.

Which browsers are people using when you have the problems?

That's a good question. Personally, I do so few searches and have, when
something unexpected is returned, figured out how to try a 2nd time or so
to retrieve what
I needed to find.
But, those who do searches regularly probably should experiment with
different browsers and maybe even with
different screen readers or different versions of a given screen reader.
On may sites, if I have an issue with one, using something else (or a
combo of these) usually gets around whatever initially renders issues.

Bill White

Yes, the problem is related to searching, especially bringing up a
particular author in the Author Alphabetic list.

Hi, Mike. Two-factor authentication will only be for libraries, according to
BARD. It won't affect patron logins.
