I am in the market for a printer?  What is the most accessible printer?

I will also be printing USPS envelopes for shipping products?

Thanks,

Justin

You are asking a very wild question – it is best that you figure out how much you can afford and if you are able to, go to a store like BestBuy Walmart, Target, Office Max or Office Depo and look around and ask questions to the person on the sales floor.

There are just too many brands and models out there and you will find prices ranging around $100 to $700 so shop around

Hi Justin,

This is probably not the answer you want, but when we replace the one we have now, hopefully it will be awhile, it will most likely be an Epson. Try searching around and seeing what is new, what is available, etc and then find their manuals and read through them to see if it sounds like something you could do. If they have apps, perhaps install them or just see if you can find out if they are accessible.

Justin,

I believe the two threshold questions you want to ask yourself are whether you want a color or a black-and-white printer and whether you want a laser or an ink printer. I used to own HP printers, but I ran into problems with them. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what they were. For several years now, I’ve owned the same Brother laser black-and-white (monochrome) printer that cost a little over or under $100. It’s been completely reliable, and the toner cartridges last thousands of pages. It’s worth taking a look at Amazon’s printer listings.

Howdy,

I totally agree with Adrian about using the laser printers.  We had Hp Ink Jet printers in both our homes and because we didn't print very often the print heads would get clogged and we would waste most of our ink cleaning the printing heads.  Well, we learned from this and now have laser all in ones in both homes.  Sure they cost a little more and replacing the toner cartridges does cost more as well but, overall it has been economically much cheaper in the long run.  Not to mention to time lost trying to get the damn ink jet printer to print!

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Justin,

I’ve found that printer accessibility matters most when setting up your system. I haven’t done it in a long time, but my recollection is that you put a CD in the PC and you’re led through the steps in a way that JAWS can verbalize. Maybe now it’s more common to be given a link to an online site for this job.

The printer should show up in your devices list, which JAWS can detect.

The process of printing is also readable by JAWS. As you know, press control-p, and the steps follow from there. I don’t know the degree to which individual printers determine this dialog, but my sense is that their role is limited.

With both my HP and Brother printers, the processes that aren’t accessible are those where the printer’s own physical controls take over. Here, you must become familiar with the printer’s directions. With luck, the user’s guide is online, although I’ve had difficulty reading these particular guides. I’ve ended up having someone sighted go through the list of controls with me.

One trick about the Brother printer is something I learned from customer comments at Amazon. My particular model, which has surely been superseded, sends a message to my PC saying I’m about to run out of ink. However, if I press a certain key on top of the printer, the life of the cartridge is significantly extended. I only know when printing has started to fade when sighted people alert me. Not even JAWS can tell me that.
