Running Outlook 2021 with JAWS 2022, I’ve occasionally been composing emails when JAWS Will rattle off a name from my contacts and say “Recent People”. It does not seem to be a consistent problem, but I cannot figure out the trigger. Anyone
seen this and have an idea why this is happening?

This happens because you are typing in a name in the To, CC, or BCC fields. If you don’t want that to happen, you need to tell Outlook not to use the AutoComplete list. Robin: I occasionally experience the same problem. There was a work around posted on this list which I use. Press insert-spacebar followed by f4. This automatically restarts Jaws, taking about 5 seconds to do so. After doing this, the problem goes away, until it randomly pops up again. I hope this helps until a permanent solution is found. Hi Tom: I am admittedly not using JAWS 2022 right now, having decided to work with the public beta of JAWS 2023. In JAWS 2023, with the subscription version of Office, I am not noticing the problem about recent people being mentioned in Outlook. And yes, I do have autocomplete turned on<smile>. This is indeed a mystery which I hope folks will report to Vispero since, on my system, I cannot replicate the problem. Best regards, Curtis Chong

Hi, Curtis. Robin didn't say that she was filling in To, CC, BCC, or Subject fields when this problem occurs. I believe it is happening during the composition of a message. Once the To, CC, and BCC fields are filled in, she shouldn't be hearing names from the Recent list.

Hi, Robin. One thing that some of us who use the latest JAWS update have been noticing is that, for no apparent reason, JAWS will say something that has been stored in its buffer that it has spoken in the past. The only work around that some have suggested is to clear the JAWS History by using the command INSERT plus SPACE, followed by H. This might be what is happening if, while you were filling in the to, CC, or BCC fields, names from your Recent list were previously spoken by JAWS.

Add me to the list of Jaws users who are experiencing Jaws speaking things from the buffer. Including hearing contacts being spoken while in the body of an email. I’m using Outlook from MS. 365 with the latest Jaws and Windows10. It seems like Jaws has been dropping the ball a lot lately. James B

Jim Weiss <jimweiss72@...>
I have the same issue running Windows 11 (21H2) fully patched, Outlook 365 (fully patched) and the July 2022 build of JAWS. I have a second machine that has the new Win 11 (22H2) and both JAWS 2022 and 2023 installed. I will see if the problem exists with both the 2022 and 2023 versions of JAWS. Hopefully it is corrected in 2023.

Hi, James. I agree with you concerning your statement that: "It seems like Jaws has been dropping the ball a lot lately." I have just sent a complaint to, orders@... regarding Vispero's policy of claiming that if third-party software behaves in an unexpected manner with JAWS, but not with other screen readers, it is an issue that must be remedied by the third-party software vendor. I do not think that this policy is in the best interest of Vispero or of Freedom Scientific, and I have noted in my complaint that my opinion is that Vispero should adopt a more proactive policy of fixing these type of problems within JAWS, rather than expecting third-party software vendors to correct them.

Guess I will chill out and write my own email to try to encourage Vispero to get more serious. I’m sure that their jobs must be a nightmare since technology is changing at such a fast rate. And the rate of 3rd party App upgrades seems to happen almost on a daily basis. And, for just right now, the damage from the hurricane can’t be helping matters for many Floridians. But, Screen readers are indescribably important for more and more VI users on a rapidly increasing basis. For work. For more and more in our every day lives. I wonder if we have additional alternatives for helping Vispero to become more concerned about their responsibility to so many. Why does Jaws 2022 have so many unsquashed bugs. Regards, James B

OK, a bit of explanation. Contacts are kept in two places in Outlook. One is your own contacts which you may have added, and the other is a history of the people you have recently written to, thus Recent People, or History if you like. So if you have written to me previously, but not added me to your contacts and you try to write to me again, you start typing the word Steve and because you wrote to me before, I am in your Recent People list, but not in your main contacts. So as soon as you type “ste” for example, all of the recent people will come up and you can arrow down to the one you want, if indeed you want one. If you don’t, just carry on typing. I hope this helps. All the best Steve

I am also having this problem in Outlook 365. JAWS 2022 is reading names from the recent contacts pop-up while I am trying to write within the body of a draft message. I recall this same problem a few years ago. I unfortunately do not recall the solution. Memory was that the MS Answer desk had a way to turn off the unnecessary recent contacts pop-up without disabling the indispensable auto complete in the recipient fields. They are not the same feature.
