Moderated new folder

Mike B.

Earlier the Alt + 2 keystroke only worked while in a folder no matter which drive I chose and now, it doesn't work at all.  This is just totally weird.

It should work in the root directory of the drive, too. I just tested it on my e drive right after opening it and it works there.

But seems this command is weirdly inconsistent. I’ve never had ctrl-shift-n fail to work, so I just use that..I don’t thinkt aht keystroke is going anywhere

Hi Dave,

After you open your Drive F, you need to be in a folder of the drive for the, Alt + 2 on the number row keystroke to work.

Thanks for the information.

I opened File Explorer and logged onto drive f, then I tried using ALT+2, to create a new folder. For me, this Windows short cut keystroke does not work, in Windows 10, so I will continue using the Windows short cut keystroke, CTRL+SHIFT+N, to create new folders.

Dave,

ALT + 2 won't work on the Desktop, but it should work in File Explorer under Windows 10, including if you're viewing the Desktop folder in File Explorer itself.

Of course, as you've noted, CTRL + SHIFT + N works, too.  I tend to use that far more frequently than ALT + 2, but either is an "easy to handle" keyboard shortcut for me.  I imagine ALT + 2 might be easier than CTRL + SHIFT + N for certain users.

Mike:

On all my computers except 1, which are running Windows 10, the ALT+2, works correctly to open the edit field to create a new folder, whether I am at the route on a any drive or inside a folder on any drive.

On the remaining computer, after I press ALT+2, not only does the command not work, if I then press the BACK SPACE KEY, to go back to the previous level, nothing happens. The only way to go back to the previous level, is to press ALT+D, then type the path statement followed by ENTER, of course, leaving out the folder which has focus.

Can we summarize the following two points from this lengthy thread?

Alt-2 and/or shift-control-n will work in some or all areas of your PC.

If neither works, be sure the screen is maximized.

By the way, if the CTRL+SHIFT+N does not work at any time, you can use the key sequence, ALT+F, followed by W, followed by f, to achieve the same thing. This is what I used to do before I came across the CTRL+SHIFT+N short cut keystroke.

Subject: Re: new folder

Hi Dave,

Shortly after I sent that reply I tried the, Alt + 2, keystroke again on both my Win10 & 11 computers and the keystroke didn't work at all whether I was on the root of a drive, in a folder or drinking a beer through a straw standing on my head!  LOL

Very strange.

Dave
