Moderated Managing what loads on Start-up in Win 10
Mike Pietruk
I'm running the latest update to Jaws2023 and am wondering what folks are
using to manage what loads upon start-up? Is it a 3rd party program or utility; and, if Win 10 itself, how does one get to where they need to be? Thanks! |

I think the best way to manage this is with Microsoft's msconfig utility. That can be launched from the run window. Go to the startup tab. Glenn ----- Original Message -----

First thing to check is task manager, startup. There is a programme called autoruns, which is a part of the sysinternals suite. It really will show everything, including registry keys. Once you run it, it will show you a very long list, and you can delete items if you want to, though I would be careful doing this as, unlike just checking an item in task manager\startup, you can't undo what you've done afterwards (I think all the checkbox in task manager does is comment out the line so that its' inactive, rather than actually deleting anything). There is documentation for all the sysinternals stuff available. Quite a lot of useful utilities there. -----Original Message-----

This functionality has been moved to task manager. The startup tab in msconfig just has a button to clickt o open task manager and view startup items from there. -----Original Message-----

Hi Mike,
Here's how to control what programs start at
startup via the Task Manager:
1. Press, Control, Shift + Escape, to open Task
Manager and Control + tab to the Startup tab.
2. Tab 1 time to get into the list of
programs.
3. Down arrow through the programs and on each
program open your context menu to enable or disable. If you hear, Disable,
this means the program is starting with the computer and if you hear, Enable,
this program is not starting at startup. Press enter on Disable or Enable
to toggle its status.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! ----- Original Message -----

To save yourself all that arrowing around and stuff, you can also just type Ms-settings:startupapps Into the run dialogue box, and you'll be right there. -----Original Message-----

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
This is one of those times I'm glad that I didn't check up on list mail immediately as I got sidetracked by other things. Needless t o say, this last response appears to b the simplest and got me to where I needed to be litterally in seconds and took care of checking and unchecking in 30 seconds or so. I'll keep all these suggestions on file in the event that there comes a time I need to go through all the arrowing for some unexpected reason. |

It's definitely good to familiarise yourself with a programme's interface, and that includes the settings app within windows. That said, nothing beats the speed and versatility of entering in commands, once you are familiar with that interface. I think personally that it's also good for instructing people on lists like this one, since you never quite know how someone's setup might be, and it's just possible that someone else's "arrow five times" is your "arrow six times" or something else. Besides, I myself could never remember how many times to press an arrow key; it's much easier for me to remember commands since the words do have meaning to them as cryptic as they might be. If you really want to get down to the low level, you should try autoruns. But I suspect for many this won't be necessary. -----Original Message-----

Just remember that what's shown in Windows Settings for startup apps and what is shown in the startup tab of Task Manager are not 100% the same. I just looked in both places using the respective instructions here and while there is very great overlap, there are a couple of things that appeared in my Task Manager startup tab that did not appear in the Startup Apps pane.
