moderated knowing the number of messages in my inbox

Madison Martin

Hi all,

If this is an Outlook thing and not something that can be fixed within Jaws then please just tell me and I’ll ask elsewhere.

Sometimes when I’m going through my inbox after Jaws has said all of the info about the message it will say something like “1 of 400,” but it doesn’t always say this; is there any way to get this to always be said? When I’m going through messages sometimes it’s nice to know how many messages are in my inbox. Using the latest version of Jaws 2022 and Microsoft 365. Thanks

Madison

Madison,

I press Insert and the 5 on my Numpad. JAWS reads who the message is from, the subject and size of the message, and finally what number of how many in the mailbox I’m in. For example 2 of 10.

Hello:

I use the JAWS command JAWS Key plus number pad 3. If using the laptop layout, it is JAWS key plus shift plus n. Try that and see how well that works.

Cordially,

Curtis Chong

Hi Madison,

Assuming you are using laptop layout, hit the caps lock key with your left hand and 3 on the num pad or the up arrow with your right hand to read the line. You will hear the number of messages at the end.

Well if there's a numpad, there's no reason to use two hands and mess with the caps lock, if one is reaching for the numpad, just do zero + 3 on the numpad.
thumb on the zero and ring finger drops down to #3.
Now if you have laptop set for any type of keyboard, the letter N  with shift + caps lock does the same, and you don't need to move your right hand over there.
Although you can mix the two, it isn't practical.

Hi,

If it says something like Filter Applied, instead of what you want, then press F6, until you hear Filter and then press the space bar on it. Tab to Clear Filters, press space on it, then tab to OK and press space on that. Now it should read out your inbox count again.

All the best

I have found that if your Inbox is empty, JAWS will continue to tell you that you have one message even if you know, for a fact, that your Inbox is empty. Otherwise, Steve is right on the money here. As for me, I continue to use INSERT+NUMPAD-3 or CAPSLOCK+SHIFT+N.

I haven’t used insert-5 for this purpose, but I just did and discovered it has a huge advantage over the insert-3 status line command. It not only lists the number of messages in a folder, but also the position of a particular message in that list. It’s a feature I’ve always missed since moving from Outlook Express to Outlook.

I haven’t been following this thread, so apologies if I’m explaining what has already been stated.

But the disadvantage is that as Curtis says, if you delete all messages, it will still tell you there is one in there. Insert 3 on the other hand, will say 0 items.

Agreed. But it can be very useful to know, even approximately, where you are in a list of messages. For example, I keep a folder of messages that require attention but not immediate attention. It gets quite long. The times I go through it, acting on some and deleting others, I like to know how much further I have to go. We all have different methods of working with email, but for this and other purposes, insert-5 is going to prove very useful to me.

Hi Madison,

Assuming you are using laptop layout, hit the caps lock key with your left hand and 3 on the num pad or the up arrow with your right hand to read the line. You will hear the number of messages at the end.
