Moderated Keyboard is acting very odd in browser
I've seen the same weird kb behavior in Chrome, Edge and Firefox but not
in Brave.
It occurs with any screen reader and with at least 3 versions of JAWS:
2021, 2022 and the new 2023 so it's not a screen reader issue.
I've come across numerous suggestions as how to fix it but the best 2 I
can offer is not using any of those browsers or, if you have an old
back-up of your hd, switch to that with the hope that this
corruption won't reappear.
Most likely, directly or indirectly, the chromium platform probablyy plays
a role in this.
About the only consolation I can offer you is that it's likely not caused
by anything you have done and that you aren't alone in experiencing this.
Keeping fingers crossed that the Brave browser continues to work normally.
sounds very similar to what you describe. I believe his issue was
related to a new virus protection software he had begun using
recently. I don't recall the name of the virus software that caused
the problem, but once it was deactivated the problem cleared up.
In case you aren't familiar with Jonathan's podcast it is called Mosen
at large and this topic was covered in the most recent show. I believe
it is #205.
I hope this helps.

This accurs in Firefox, crome, and Edge. It's happening in multiple screen
readers with the common keys,, but I'm not sure where else to go with this
question. If I press H to go to the next heading, it will do that. The next
time I press H, it thinks it is a J and trys to jump to line. After that
comes placemarker, ETC. I'm not having this problem if I go back to the
address field to put in a differentURL. Does anyone have any suggestions?

One of the problems with this truly strange keyboard non-typing correctly
is that the potential solutions are numerous but guessing which one is the
magic wand is a hit and miss process.
Yet another is that the ctfmon.exe program under
c:\sindows\system32
isn't running and needs to be restarted and that it should always be
automatically started upon boot up.
Well, that was not my magic wand among other alternatives.
Apparently, all resolve the situation in certain circumstances but there
isn't one universal answer that works universally.
Apparently, something within the chromium platform blocks the keyboard
from working normally which appears triggered by some outside event.
Phillip solution, a restore point that worked, is the best answer so far.
That ought to work for everyone assuming they have a restore point that
brings things back to normal and can be kept that way.
The more pr this gets, the more likely we will ultimately see the
situation resolve itself.
If I am able to paste something created outside of the browser, such as in
a text editor, it works fine.
Pardon my ignorance, what is sophos; and, assuming I have it on the effect
pc, how do I go about disabling the key logger to test if this resolves
things.
BTW, my Brave browser continues to function perfectly.
The operative question at this point is "What antivirus software are you
running on your system?" Does this software have its key logger function
turned on. For others, the key logger function seems to be the crux of the
issue. In my case, I am running Eset Internet Security, and while I thought
the key logger function would be great, I ultimately gave up on it because
of the exact problem you have described.
Kind regards,

Sounds like a likely culprit, at least at this point.

Assuming that this indeed is the cause, is there a work around or a fix.

it is not on ESET or any other company to come up with a fix, since from their point of view, the function does what it's supposed to do, and screen readers just happen to be legid applications that are affected.
Screen reader vendors and anti-virus companies should find a solution together somehow, but not sure that's going to happen anytime soon.
The anti-virus thinks that JAWS -- or any other screen reader for that matter -- is logging key presses, which it does to an extent.
Key logging is used maliciously to intercept credit card data, passwords, or any other form of login credentials by viruses, banking trojans, and so on.
That key logger protection tries to help the user by denying the apps in question the logging of key presses, including JAWS, NVDA, and whatever somehow hooks into keyboard functions to process them.
The solution would be to disable that function for the time being, or somehow try to find a way to create exception rules for your screen readers.
Since I am not using Sophos, ESET or other software, I would not know where in settings to look for that option.
Maybe you can call Microsoft disability to assist you here, since that's a very bad implementation.
Kaspersky Antivirus was one of the companies who also used that sort of protection, and I think they managed to make exceptions for screen readers at some point.

Nermin
