Moderated key strokes to get time and date

Kevin Meyers

I just upgraded to Jaws2023. When using Jaws2022 I would press jaws and f12 to get the time. Then do a second time very quickly to get the date. Now with Jaws 2023 I cannot get the time or date. Were these key strokes changed? Thanks, Kevin

Hi, Kevin. The keystrokes to get the time and date have not changed in JAWS 2023. It sounds as if your computer's BIOS has reverted to the use of Action Keys. Is this on a laptop or on a desktop computer. If on a desktop, I can't think what the trouble might be, as desktop computers don't usually have Action or Media keys set to the function keys.

The keystrokes have remained the same for as long as I can recall.
I've found that sometimes the 2nd repeat to get the date and year can fail
and may require multiple attempts.
But for the time itself, it's very reliable.

Consider what Bill mentioned in his reply to you.

I've also found that the keystroke to get the date has to be done fairly
quickly after the one for the time.

As you say: that 2nd keystroke has to be rapid; often, I'm not quick
enough <smile>>
But you can always do it again, of course.

Hi, With the help of Bill, we figured out I somehow pressed the function(fn) key and escape key. This turns my function keys to have other functions. Once I pressed fn and escape again it turned the function keys back to the normal function and pressing jaws key and f12 gave me the time. Doing it quickly gave me the date like it did in the past.

Thanks,

Kevin

This is tremendous that your problem has been Solved as the keystrokes
are not changed at all! Otherwise, I would have recommended sharkey to
perform this task.

I use JAWS key plus F 12 to get the time and JAWS key plus F 12 twice quickly to get the date

I think the issue here ultimately is that we think that there is a way to
get both the time plus the date at the same time -- right now Jaws doesn't
that.
If you want the date, you have to skip getting the time with that 2nd
quick repeat of insert+f12.
Window-Eyes, my original screen reader for Windows, provided that in a
single command.
Perhaps, what JAWS should have, is a setting toggle allowing the option of
insert+f12 to give both at the same time.
