moderated Jaws volume rising and dipping

Murray Peat <murraytp@...>

Hi there,

Sorry, one more question.

With my new Lenovo laptop I am finding that the Jaws volume rises and falls of its own accord. Sometimes this happens while working with a specific programme however mostly it happens if I open something new or move to another task. I guess this may be a sound card issue. Has anyone else come across this and perhaps knows how to resolve it?

I am using Jaws22 on Windows 10 Enterprise

With thanks

Murray

I have, it was Realtec's high definition audio drivers. I just uninstalled them and let Windows install the default high definition audio drivers that come with it. Problem solved. I hope that helps you, that volume problem was really annoying.

Mine did that and I did something to make the sound the same globally. Sorry but I don’t remember what it was. I know it was something in Jaws setting and I did the default to get it to do it to all the apps. I might have just changed the volume so that it was done across everything. I just know it drove me nuts for awhile too.

You could also check for updates. It’s possible I did nothing and that did it.

Mine still does that on my personal HP Pavilion and I didn’t know a fix. I just figured it was a problem with a cheap sound card and since I don’t know how to reproduce it on demand, I didn’t’ know how to troubleshoot it. I’m inclined to think it’s what the one person wrote about the Realtec drivers.

If its the Realtec drivers, I think its because it keeps switching profiles, in my case there were two, speakers and headphones, I also had the problem that the beginning of speech was being cut off.

Another very good reason, at least in my mind, is because their user interface was totally inaccessible so you couldn't do a thing with them.

Problems with speech being cut off has a setting in jaws that needs to be
changed. Go through the following to make the change.
utilities
settings center
user
avoid speach cut off when blue tooth or some sound cards are used
Place a check in the box here and save the changes.

I knew of that setting and it didn't do anything for this problem. Apparently the Realtec drivers very aggressively put the audio system hardware to sleep to save on battery usage and it takes too much time to wake them so you lose the beginning of what JAWS says and there is apparently no way to turn that off.

Hi, Gene and Kevin. There actually is a program you can install that will correct this problem, even if the setting in JAWS doesn't correct it. Download the Silenzio program from the following link,

For me, if the problem is the Realtec drivers, I prefer to get rid of them and use Microsoft's default drivers, but just in case that isn't the problem, I downloaded the file, for future use when I get a new computer. Right now I am using the default drivers and there are no problems, and as a bonus, the driver's user interface is fully accessible!

Another thing worthy to try is to go to control panel, make sure to set the display to small icon or large icon. After that go into sound, underplayback tab choose speaker and go to its property. From there disable all the sound enhancement under the "enhancement tab". Granted, some people may not like the sound without enhancement, but it solves the volume issue.
JAWS also provides possible fix under the default configuration, when you search for sound. Just try to uncheck "Avoid speech cut off when using Bluetooth headphones or some sound cards".
