Moderated JAWS settings

Don Walls

Hi folks, I’ve had an interesting week with my rebuilt computer and finding my way tentatively around some Office 2021 stuff.  The other day I could search using google chrome but now seem mired in settings.  I hope a friend will help me sort that later today.

I’m wondering where to go to try to change some JAWS verbosity stuff.  With my In folder it announces my name, gives the memory space each email uses but not the number where a specific email is in the list of emails.  I don’t care how much memory each titchy, little email takes but would like to know how many emails are in a particular folder.  Any thoughts?

On Chrome settings, it’s annoying how they keep cropping up when not wanted. The way I get out of them is by pressing escape once, and maybe twice, and then F5.

To locate where you are in a list of messages, try JAWS key-numpad 5. Some listers object that the result isn’t accurate, but from what I can tell, it’s off by at most 1. For the number of messages in a folder, press JAWS key-numpad 3. No one disputes the accuracy of this result.

Adrian, your directions didn’t work with JAWS and emails but were very helpful with google.  Many thanks for your quick reply.

I notice that when I open an email, JAWS may read a footer but not the text of the message until I use jaws key and 2 on the num pad.  Can I change settings so that JAWS will read an email as soon as I open this?  Or does this have to do with Office 2021?

Hi Don,

I don't use Outlook but, with Outlook open and no messages open press, Insert + V, to open quick settings and in here I think you'll find the necessary settings.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Mike, thanks for this.  It didn’t change JAWS in Outlook but reminded me to tweak Word and that helped that area.  I don’t know how to get at the verbosity I want in Outlook – to remove the mention of memory used in each email.

Try looking under quick settings and locate automatically read messages. I guess for office 365 it’s on by default, you’re not using office 365, so it should be off.

Verify that the checkbox isn’t checked though.

I have already looked t quick settings and “Automatically read” was checked.  Curious.  Thanks for your response anyway.

Ignore my last email.  It IS working after all.  It’s just that some emails opened and what was read was the footer and not the body of the text.  All seems well now!
