moderated jaws scan cursor and question about vlc media player
Josh Kennedy
hi,
I am new to the list. I am running the latest jaws. I wanted to see if I could make vlc media player a bit more accessible but first I had to find the play button and other controls. I went into script utility mode but in short it seems like the only cursor that can find those is the touch cursor and they are unlabeled buttons but you can't tab to them. The jaws scan cursor doesn't find them even with graphics set to all. I want to make a script that will let me press tab and cycle through the normally untabbable buttons. last, in windows11 notepad I have a bit of an issue because I want to make a user script so when I press control shift n, it reads the status line. The touch cursor can see it but it doesn't say status bar, the jaws cursor and invisible cursor just say blank. So why is it that the jaws scan cursor activate in vlc, but not in notePad and is there any way to force the jaws scan cursor to activate when an application is loaded maybe an autoStart function that tells jaws the app I am running should use it? If jaws scan were active in notepad I could more easily make a script to read the bottom line of the window. And script utility mode in notepad is not showing me the status bar or any toolbars or buttons either.

Hey.
Can’t help really, but I do think a VLC script is a cool idea, even if it’s just for your personal use. I personally am not that bothered by the buttons there as everything has a key-press associated with it. However it’s the dialogues within VLC, like the all perferences page, that have become exceedingly difficult to use. Not sure what happened as VlC used to be a lot more friendly and yes, you could even tab between the buttons on the main screen if you wanted to.

BTW, you’ll end up with a key conflict if you use ctrl-shift-s in notepad since that opens the save as dialogue. Isn’t there already a commnnd to read the status line?

Hello Josh:
Most of us who start out using VLC Media Player find a list of shortcut keys using our favorite search engine. There are actually quite a few of useful commands.
You may find this page helpful:
I will admit that jumping to a specific time within a recorded file is a bit problematic. But most folks just use the left or right arrow to skip through material.
Others on this list may be able to impart more information here.
All the best,

Leasey offers some additional support for VLC Media Player. From the above link you’ll not only find the complete manual but one of the Leasey Bite tutorials talks about what features Leasey offers for that program. As has already been suggested you can also use your search engine of choice and search for VLC Media Player Keyboard Shortcuts and you should find plentiful lists.

I would also like to make a script so when I fast forward and rewind through a file jaws will read the current time so if I am 8 minutes into a 2 hour long mp3 I will know that. But I can't find any script functions letting me script the jaws scan cursor.
Jaws and NVDA and narrator are the same. lets just say they are not very smart. I hope to see a day where jaws could upon when you open a new application, analyse the screen to see what is happening when you navigate the application and automatically read what may catch a sighted person's eye such as changing status lines and things. And in more difficult applications with lots of unlabeled buttons or graphics Jaws would, without any or little input from the user first try labeling the buttons or unknown controls or unknown windows using conventional methods but it would do this automatically by analyzing the application without you having to script it. If it could not determine what the unidentified window or control is through conventional means it would then auto-OCR and try and figure it out that way. If it still can't figure out what's going on and what unknown windows and controls are on screen, it would use a more advanced cloud service and if it still can't it would send a special screen shot and report to sighted people who would label the controls and send their labels to an A-I training model server so jaws could recognise similar applications and unknown windows and controls and such in the future. For specialized things you could still turn Jaws A-I mode off and resort to conventional scripting if you wanted to.I wish screen readers were smart, like my alexa device, learning over time what I like and don't like, or in Jaws case, and this goes for other screen readers as well, automatically learn about the applications I am using and read what catches a sighted user's eye and automatically teach itself about unknown windows, graphics, controls, even inaccessible video game screens and menus to try and make them as accessible as possible.

Josh, along the lines of what Brian has already stated I think that eventually we may see screen readers tap into AI at some point. Btw, Brian Hartgen does sell a script writing tutorial.

Ah. Interesting; did not know that and I guess thast’ one of the other small but still somehow significant things that’s changed about ntoepad in Windows 11, which I won’t be getting until this computer expires, probably. This seems like something Freedom Scientific or whatever they call themselves now will be wanting to fix. Notepad is after all a core windows component. Maybe this is coming in a future update. You should probably write them to let you know you’ve noticed it’s no longer working as it should.

All these ideas sound great. All we need is the right expertise, and of course, the financial compensation that expertise requires. And, I suppose, time – lots of time to implement what would be some pretty fundamental but worthy changes to how screen-readers operate.

If you use the Notepad frequently, you may have noticed
that the Status Bar option under View is always greyed out or disabled. In this
post, we will see the
reason for this and how you can enable Status
Bar in Notepad – via the Notepad UI itself or with a registry

The Status Bar appears at the bottom of the Notepad and
gives information like the number of Lines and the number of columns; the text

Now if you click on View, and you will see that the
Status Bar option is greyed out. Click on Format and then uncheck the Word Wrap
option. Now go back,
and you will see that the Status Bar option is available and you can enable it. This is not a bug, but it is by
design!
If you want to use the Status Bar under View or the Go To
(Ctrl+G) under Edit options, you will have to turn off Word Wrap under Format
first, since Word
Wrap messes with line breaks. That is how Notepad has
been programmed.

But if you wish, you can via the Windows Registry force
Notepad to always have the Status Bar enabled.
To do this, Run regedit and navigate to the following

Here change the StatusBar DWORD value from 0 to 1. Press

Brian is absolutely right. When the touch cursor was first implemented I perceived it as something that was optional, experimental and a bit beyond me. However, I eventually realized that this was similar and in some ways identical to the functionality of NVDA’s object navigation which I understood how to use thanks to the Mac’s interaction commands. On a recent podcast Glen Gordon joked that there were probably only twelve people using the touch cursor. I think that as time goes by and as people continue to use different apps the touch cursor will prove to be more and more useful and I encourage users to get to know it for that reason.

You should probably write them to let you know you’ve noticed it’s no longer working as it should.

yes but in notepad in windows11 the status line is non-standard and the jaws and invisible cursors can't see it, only the touch cursor can see it.

Hi Josh & all,

Notepad: I don't know if someone mentioned this before but if the status bar is visible you could use JAWS+Page down to read the status bar. VLC media player: Some time ago I made some scripts for VLC, but unfortunately they are in German only. At the time I haven't the time to translate the messages in English but maybe others have the time and knowledge to do this for the VLC scripts. VLC was a really hard job to do because the QT framework isn't really accessible and some parts of VLC like some dialogs are still not accessible. If someone is interested in the scripts you can find it on the German FS site <https://www.freedomsci.de/servdiv.htm>. The direct download location is here: TouchCursor: I agree to those who said object navigation is more and more important these days. To my opinion TouchCursor unfortunately is a bit sluggish and had some important feature I was missing. Therefor I created another cursor type called ObjectCursor. This was the first script I made for the English and German language so you can use it to have some extra opportunities, for example first letter navigation to a name (for example press "e" to get through all controls beginning with the letter "e" - till you reach you searched control for example a button called exit. There's a huge help file which describes all features in details as well as the installation. One word to all before downloading: I added the source code to each of my scripts in the hope that you all will learn from the code and I hope you won't use the code to sell scripts made of this code. I share this code and scripts to make this world a better place and hope you will honor this and don't enrich on my scripts and code. Here's the direct link to the ObjectCursor: Enjoy it Udo
