Moderated Jaws not speaking while typing in notepad but does in Word

Karen Reynolds

Hi Mike,

I’ve tried this. It worked at the moment. We’ll see if it does long term. It also worked for the short term after I changed the font style.

Hi Karen,

This is a longshot but, give this a try.  While in Notepad press, Insert + 2, on the number row above the main keyboard to toggle through the echo settings and stop on, Words.  Now type in Notepad and see if anything has changed.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Use insert plus s to toggle the modes on the fly and see what happens then.

I set it to words because that is what I like. Are you saying I have to set it to characters for Jaws to read anything there while I’m typing in a txt file?

Hi Karen,

When you say:

"I did that. It is the same as what I set it to-words and highlighted."

are you saying that you have previously made that setting
or
you have followed the directions given to you by HH

Thanks,

Hi karen,

Open notepad

Press Insert + F2)

Arrow down to setting center, hit enter

Type ‘echo’ in search field, then tab once

Echo setting for Notepad will be listed

Arrow through, the spacebar changes the options

The very first one should say, ‘characters’

The only issue I’ve seen for other programs is Outlook. It is not as bad there, and only happens when it seems that my laptop is doing something in the background. I can tell it is because the fans spin up and are loud and everything slows down. Outlook works normal when this is not going on. This other issue is specific, or seems to be, with Notepad and only since my upgrade to Windows 11. I’ve changed the font from a fixed one to a proportional one and hopefully that will do it. Guess we will see. The only other change I’ve seen between Windows 10 and 11 for notepad is that when I open notepad it reads “notepad” then “text editor”. It never read the “text editor” in Windows 10.

The reason I asked if you are having the same trouble in Wordpad, was to try to see if Notepad was the only program you are having the problem with.

If you are able to use other programs with no problem, but only having the trouble with Notepad, it may be a problem with Notepad.

If you are having the same problem with other programs, it may not be a problem with Notepad.

Hi,

I’ve noticed that not only does Jaws not speak while I type in notepad, but when it does type it is slow, sometimes missing letters. In Word everything works normally. The change that has occurred since this began is that I upgraded to the latest version of Windows 11. I’m running the latest version of Jaws as well. Ideas of what can be causing Jaws not only not to speak words as I type them as it is set to do with everything, and does in everything else, but it is very slow when I up arrow a line to actually read that line I have typed.

Please don’t tell me the solution is to use Word, as I like to use txt files in notepad to strip all the extra stuff out.

I have no idea how to set it as default without losing the changes I've
made.

I'll give what I have done a try. What tipped the balance and made me ask
about it was that I was trying to take notes during the FS zoom meeting
yesterday on braille displays. It kept going wonky and now I'm going to have
to relisten to the program because I missed so much. For someone who can
type as fast as someone can talk, this thing drives me nuts.

As for full window, I have no clue. I've tried doing f11, but not sure it
worked. I know it does with Edge and Firefox. What does putting it in full
screen do?

There is a switch that you can use to run JAWS in default mode, can't
remember what it is now but that may be worth a try.
It just loads for testing with default options for everything and scripts
etc.
To be honest, I have come across some occasions when notepad behaves like
this but closing and re-opening normally sorts it out, it could be a window
in the background or something.
Is it maximised.
Unload JAWS and then re-open with Notepad open and try then.

Doing what I suggested is only a temporary fix.  You'll need to set it permanently in Notepad / Settings Center or,
Settings Center default all applications

Another thing to check is the speech and sound scheme.  While in Notepad press, Insert, Alt + S, to open the list of speech and sound schemes.  The scheme that is currently in use is highlighted, and if the, Classic, scheme isn't in use navigate to, Classic, and press enter and hopefully this will help if nothing else does.

In this case, Jaws' enu file.
Learned that last year from Brian Hartgen's Jaws Muscles course.

I know this is not a solution for Notepad, but why not use HJ Pad to take your notes. You can save in TXT or RTF file format and it has a spell checker and some very simple format settings. I personally seldom use Notepad.

Thanks for the hjpad.exe suggestion as an alternate text editor.
I'll keep that in mind.
I've been using Jamal Mazrui's Edsharp which has been around for longer
than I can remember. l
Amazingly, it still works in modern Windows system and is very blind
friendly as it should be as it was written by a
blind programmer.

And looking in the ENU folder, there seems to be a script included for

HJPAD.

Mike Pietruk

That's the program, Karen.

And, in a few minutes, I'll get you the answer on the path for the ENU
folder;
btw, ENU = English North America.

Hi Karen,

Yes, that's it.  Now create a desktop shortcut icon from that .EXE file.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

It is a program which is included with Jaws and is very similar to Word Pad
but with the spell checker. I have used it for years and love it. Go to Go
to This PC/program files/freedom scientific/jaws/ 2023 (or whatever version
you are using) and find hjpad.exe I then put a shortcut on the desktop.

I know this is not a solution for Notepad, but why not use HJ Pad to take
your notes. You can save in TXT or RTF file format and it has a spell
checker and some very simple format settings. I personally seldom use
Notepad.

Karen and all

The Jaws Settings folder is at this path on my win10 desktop:

C:\Users\hp envy\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2023\Settings\enu

An alternate way to find is through %appdata%

from the run dialog, type "%appdata%" without the quote marks:

you'll see a listing for all the programs that have such data files.

typing the letter "f" will get you to Freedom Scientific; and so forth.

My ENU folder has over 200 files; so, it's jampacked with stuff.
There are a bunch of JAWS scripts, including those I have for Leasey,
place marker files, et al.

Personally, I try backing it up every week or 2 and keep 2 back-ups on
file.
I'm far more comfortable playing around with JAWS settings when I have
back-ups just in case I either mess things up, something goes haywire as
it did for Karen, or I decide later that some changes are best undone.

And I like back-ups for some other programs/apps that are under %appdata%.

From what I understand, you can also get to the settings folder through
Jaws' Utilities menu.

I'm guessing that a knowledgable user might be able to make repairs by
replacing specific files in that folder.

Hi Mike,

I did but it added short cut to the end of the name, so I used shift f10 to rename it and remove it. Does it have to have the .exe in the name?
