Moderated Jaws not speaking while typing in notepad but does in Word

Karen Reynolds

Hi,

I’ve noticed that not only does Jaws not speak while I type in notepad, but when it does type it is slow, sometimes missing letters. In Word everything works normally. The change that has occurred since this began is that I upgraded to the latest version of Windows 11. I’m running the latest version of Jaws as well. Ideas of what can be causing Jaws not only not to speak words as I type them as it is set to do with everything, and does in everything else, but it is very slow when I up arrow a line to actually read that line I have typed.

Please don’t tell me the solution is to use Word, as I like to use txt files in notepad to strip all the extra stuff out.

Hi Karen,

When was the last time you rebooted your computer?

Do you also have the same problem while typing in wordpad?

Thanks,

TJ

Hi TJ,

It’s a laptop, so it gets rebooted regularly.

And no, I’ve not used wordpad.

Have you maximised the screen?

Try unloading and re-loading JAWS?

The reason I asked if you are having the same trouble in Wordpad, was to try to see if Notepad was the only program you are having the problem with.

If you are able to use other programs with no problem, but only having the trouble with Notepad, it may be a problem with Notepad.

If you are having the same problem with other programs, it may not be a problem with Notepad.

The only issue I’ve seen for other programs is Outlook. It is not as bad there, and only happens when it seems that my laptop is doing something in the background. I can tell it is because the fans spin up and are loud and everything slows down. Outlook works normal when this is not going on. This other issue is specific, or seems to be, with Notepad and only since my upgrade to Windows 11. I’ve changed the font from a fixed one to a proportional one and hopefully that will do it. Guess we will see. The only other change I’ve seen between Windows 10 and 11 for notepad is that when I open notepad it reads “notepad” then “text editor”. It never read the “text editor” in Windows 10.

I set it to words because that is what I like. Are you saying I have to set it to characters for Jaws to read anything there while I’m typing in a txt file?

Hi Karen,

This is a longshot but, give this a try.  While in Notepad press, Insert + 2, on the number row above the main keyboard to toggle through the echo settings and stop on, Words.  Now type in Notepad and see if anything has changed.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

There is a switch that you can use to run JAWS in default mode, can't
remember what it is now but that may be worth a try.
It just loads for testing with default options for everything and scripts
etc.
To be honest, I have come across some occasions when notepad behaves like
this but closing and re-opening normally sorts it out, it could be a window
in the background or something.
Is it maximised.
Unload JAWS and then re-open with Notepad open and try then.

Hi TJ,

Thanks. I got confused about what you were saying.

The only two changes I found when I went down under settings and looked at latest changes was that I turned off the keyboard languages because Jaws speaking Spanish when it was really English was driving me nuts. Okay, I might already be nuts, but that’s another list. The other thing was that after the last update to Jaws I found that it had lost the Bluetooth connection to my braille display. I had to reset that.
