moderated JAWS does not read selected text in Jarte
Mario
an acquaintance is having a problem that I'm hoping someone can help.
he is using Jarte, and when he selects some text to delete, it is not read back as selected like it does using Wordpad. he would prefer using Jarte because he can start a new document by simply pressing control+n and then use control+tab to switch to a different document. I helped him disable Enhanced edit in the configuration for JAWS 2020 so it is possible to review the text. is there another setting that can be modified to fix this problem?

Mario, I am sorry to tell you that I am able to verify your friend's findings, at least with the January build of JAWS 2021. I've been a user of Jarte for many years and I'm quite certain that this is a new regression. I don't have JAWS 2020 on this laptop or else I'd compare the results with that version. I'm wondering if someone running JAWS 2020 or earlier can confirm this behavior.

A few things to note. In order to get JAWS to speak the location of the caret or cursor from within Jarte enhanced editor mode should be disabled within Settings Center but please do this once Jarte has been opened to ensure that toggling this setting to off will not negatively impact another program. For reference when you press the shift key with arrow key navigation the expected behavior is that you would hear the text which you are highlighting, along with the word "selected." With Jarte text is being selected but JAWS is silent while selection commands are being issued. If others can confirm this behavior please do send a bug report to support@vispero.com with as much specific information as you can provide: version of JAWS, steps to reproduce, expected results and actual results. 6.2 is the latest version of Jarte. Please direct any responses about this to the list and not to me privately as I am not able to provide individual support for Jarte or with this issue, in general. This was a problem with Jarte in Jaws 2020 as well. I have just checked and it still it. It was working with earlier versions of Jaws than that I think Basically, a bit like Windows Mail Jarte only works properly with NVDA now though it sort of usable with Narrator. It remains a very good option with NVDA so this is a sort of workaround, there is certainly no problem with selected text being announced.
At least I have finally got some feedback that the problem for Jaws causing windows Mail to crash seems to have been finally acknowledged by support and they say that they have escalated it. This is my main priority for Jaws functional improvement.
I could aske them to address the Jarte issue as well but I wonder what their attitude will be? Especially as Jarte is no longer being developed? They seem to prioritise , probably correctly on the Office Suite.

David, your point is valid in that improving accessibility of Office would and arguably should be a higher priority to improving access to a word processor which has ceased development last year. Certainly, if you’re not a Jarte user then it’s understandable that letting Vispero know about this wouldn’t necessarily be a high priority for you. However, since many blind people do seem to use Jarte I would encourage all of them to contact Vispero about this since selecting text used to work as expected. I plan to do so myself but when it comes to reporting bugs there is something to be said for strength in numbers. If I’m the only one who reports this issue it may not go anywhere that quickly. If Vispero receives similar reports from many Jarte users that could help to push things up the chain just a bit faster.

David, using JAWS 2020 with the latest update and the portable version of Jarte, I have tried and experienced the same issue. I'm wondering if it has to do with the highlighting that Jarte does (or lack of) when selecting text?

On another computer I was able to confirm that selected text is not being identified with JAWS 2020. However, it works as expected with JAWS 2019.

Hello. There is a workaround for the bug involving JAWS not identifying selected text when in Jarte. Until the issue has been fixed you can use the place markers feature to mark the beginning of a block of text with ctrl+Windows+K. Next, move to the other end of the block of text and press the layered keystroke insert+space key followed by the letter M. Once this has been done you can delete, cut or copy the text. For best results it is good to first save the document before issuing these commands. Keyboard Manager can also be used to reassign these keys to ones of your choosing. Users of Leasey already have additional keystrokes to mark text as well as copying and even appending a block of text to the clipboard. Questions about these matters should be sent to this list and not to me privately, please.

Mario, while JAWS won't specifically identify or verify the text which has been selected these commands should still allow you to cut, copy, delete and format text until Vispero corrects the issue.

From: David Goldfield [david.goldfield@...] Sent: 1/8/2021 5:45 PM To: support@... Subject: Bug: JAWS Does Not Identify Selected or Highlighted Text In The Jarte Word Processor Description: The following issue can be consistently reproduced in the January build of JAWS 2021 as well as in the latest build of JAWS 2020. This bug does not exist in JAWS 2019. When in the Jarte word processor executing commands to select text does not speak. Pressing the shift key along with arrow keys does select the text but JAWS is silent. Steps to Reproduce 1. Open Jarte. 2. Enter some text in the blank document. 3. Press ctrl+home to move to the top of the document. 4. Press the shift key along with arrow keys to select text. Expected Results JAWS should verify the text as it is being selected, followed by the word “selected.” Actual Results JAWS is silent when selecting text. Vispero Case# 00526739, Bug: JAWS Does Not Identify Selected or Highlighted Text In The Jarte Word Processor [ ref:_00Df21A3ry._5005w1h1vyr:ref ] Hello David: Thank you for the report. I've escalated your findings to the software development team. We appreciate the feedback.
