Moderated jaws and pdf documents.

hi,
i am having an issue with jaws 2021 and the latest version of adobe pdf reader. for some reason, it keeps jumping back to the top of the page. there is only one page in the document. this does not happen if the document has multiple pages. if, after the document is loaded, i start to scroll through it, it keeps jumping back. if i sit and wait for about a minute, it works fine most of the time. i have set the various options, infer reading from document, continous page etc. nothing makes any difference. any ideas? regards, patrick |

Hi, Patrick. I have this same trouble sometimes with pdf documents. I have found that, if possible, it is best to open the document, select the entire document, and copy the content into a Microsoft Word file. This allows viewing of the contents of the document without having to deal with the Adobe interface.

The point is to get out of Adobe as soon as possible and do your reading/viewing of the file outside of the pdf conversion program. And, I tend to save the text, if I wish to go back to it later, in a .txt or .rtf file. |

using a screen reader. 1. Set Adobe Acrobat DC as your default pdf reader. 2. Press ENTER on the pdf file you want to open. 3. Press CONTROL plus K to open Adobe Preferences. 4. Press ESCAPE to close Adobe Preferences. 5. Now the dialog should come up asking how you want to read the pdf document (left to right reading order etc. 6. TAB to the Start button, and press ENTER. Like you, Zel, I'm finding it takes a really long time for the accessibility options dialog to appear in newly opened pdfs in Adobe. At my company, I tried to set my default to Adobe for PDFs, but some of our HR files still open in Edge. When needed, I now save the PDF file to my documents folder and select the convenient OCR option from the context menu. JAWS Will then OCR the file without ever having to actually open the file in a browser or Adobe. I find this vastly faster than waiting for adobe to process the file, only to then tell me that I have to use convenient OCR on it.

Bill, I'm eager to try your trick. I've been going to the edit menu to select accessibility options there, but that can still be really slow. I'm guessing that Adobe is still processing the file in the background, so it's just not ready to give me accessibility options, but the wait seems ridiculously long.

You might want to consider another option: Using Tracker Software’s PDF-Xchange Viewer to OCR Process Image Scanned PDFs I only wish PDF-Xchange Viewer were completely accessible but, alas, it's not, but it's perfectly accessible for this purpose, and very fast for short (read, under 50 pages) documents. I've used it to process documents of several hundred pages that were originally imaged scanned, and its OCR accuracy is very, very good. I've had clients who wanted to OCR in languages other than English, Spanish, German, and French (the default four that "come with") and they have language packs available at no cost for something like 25 or 30 languages. In any case, the advantage being that the text layer gets saved with the PDF if you follow that tutorial (Disclosure: I wrote it) and then, if you so choose, you can open that PDF in any of the versions of Word from 2013 and later and have the text come right in. I'm not a huge fan of the OCR features of any of the screen readers except for "quick and dirty" use on the fly. Dedicated tools work better, in my experience, and even though it's a bit more tedious it's a "one and done" affair for any given PDF file. This all started when I had a couple of clients who were graduate students who were constantly being handed old image-scanned PDFs as part of their course reading. I suggested to them that after doing the above, they send the resulting OCRed file back to their professor and ask that it be used going forward so that no other blind student will need to do what they did again. Thanks, Brian. Thankfully, I do have Kurzweil on my laptops and I don’t think I want to tackle asking to have another converter added to my work laptop. Typically a rough OCR scan is sufficient to get my head around documents for work. I use Kurzweil if I need tables and such in the PDF.

It appears that the “Editor” version is the only supported version now, the “Viewer” version is deprecated and last updated in June 2018. I have lobbed an email to their sales team since the website is not overly clear if you can use the software for free for a period of time or with limited functionality. It appears that the “Editor” version is the only supported version now, the “Viewer” version is deprecated and last updated in June 2018.- Yes, it's deprecated, but it still downloadable and works and since there's nothing "cyber-connected" about it, I still use it and recommend it. They've been calling it "discontinued" for heading in to 5 years now, but it's actually gotten an update or two during that period. I do not use PDF-XChange Editor, which is what they replaced it with and for which there is a free and a paid version. Hi, After years of frustration with Adobe, I keep its use at a minimum now. My default PDF reader is a free blindness-specific app called Bookworm. I don't want to jinx it, but it works rather well. And for tables in PDFs, I still use Adobe. For OCR-ing PDFs that are image-based, I use ABBYY Fine Reader 14.
