Moderated Jaws and Dell freezing during a tandem session
James Malone
Hi all, I’m working with a client that has a Dell Laptop. Has anyone experienced Jaws freezing on a Dell laptop, and what happened? I was doing a Tandem session, and around 7 to 10 minutes of no activity, Jaws went Silent. We tried to bring Jaws back, by refreshing the screen, and also tried to load Narrator, but the machine hung. Just so you know, We set all machines to include my Dell to never sleep. So I’m reaching out to all Dell users that might have had similar issues. I’ll need to know the make of your dell. For example: mines a Inspiron7-10 11, gen I 7 processor. I don’t really need to know everything about it, however I’ll need to find out what type of issues you had in regards to the system hanging. I’ve created a ticket number with VFO, and I was told that Dell had issues in regards to causing Jaws to frees, but they didn’t tell me what models were effected. So I’m reaching out to you to possibly find the answers. Best: James

Hi, James. I don't have a Dell, but I also have experienced JAWS and Tandem freezing after as little as three or four minutes of no activity. I have a custom-built desktop, am using Windows 10, and JAWS 2023.

Yep. My Soni freezes in tandem also. When I disconnect the speech is gone and I have to reboot.

I wonder if setting the audio device a higher priority would help.

That is done in device manager. You go to the list of hardware and arrow down to the sound devices and right arrow into that and when you find your sound card, enter on it, and go to one of the tabs and on one of them, you may find a priority option. And perhaps it isn't audio related. Folks might try going into startup in MsConfig and disabling everything and try a tandem session and see if it no longer freezes. I have two Dell work stations that are similar in their features. One struggles with Teams and I have to turn off the video I send at times to keep it running. The other machine has no problems with Teams. The problem machine has video on the motherboard and the other has a separate video card.

I have a 10 year old I3 machine that I added a cheap video card to have HDMI output. It can also handle Teams, Zoom, and other video without problems. Tony -----Original Message-----

One thing I always do is to do alt enter on this PC (or computer in windows

James:
It is nothing to do with what type of computer you
are dealing with, whether it be a brand name computer or a computer you build
yourself or, a computer you have built for you. I have had this happen to me
during a Tandom session several times, when the 2 systems have been inactive for
a while. I cannot be certain but, I believe there is probably a time out
function, that disconnects the Tandom session after a given amount of time, if
there has been no interaction, between the 2 systems.

From what I understand JAWS in tandem is designed
to disconnect after a period of inactivity.
I'm not sure how long this is so what I do is if talking to someone every minute or two press an arrow key or a key that will ensure some kind of activity between your machine and the other. On 18/11/2022 12:08, Bill White wrote:

Hi Dave, Yes your right about the time out feature. The time out feature is 60 minutes, and your right about it being that it could be any computer. However, in this case the entire system shuts down or freezes. I can’t even start Narrator. I’m bringing this subject up, because Tech support is saying that a lot of Dell’s has a problem when it comes to hanging. On this Dell, I haven’t seen any issues as of yet.

a Tandem session. To answer some of your responses, the Tandem session has a time limit of 60 minutes, and also has a 60 minute limit of inactivity. You can find this information out in the Tandem users guide. On most machines, the power settings can be adjusted to go to sleep, and most laptops will usually go to sleep after 3 minutes when in a inactive state. This can be adjusted in all windows versions, and I'm sure everyone is aware of this. -----Original Message-----

I have had times when I signed into a team a couple of hours ahead of time just to be sure I didn’t forget. I was never timed out.
May be the difference between free and paid versions of Teams.
I’ve only had problems on a machine with video on the motherboard and then with the camera on and trying to share my screen.
