Moderated Jaws 2023 and Firefox

Audiobookfan

I just upgraded from Jaws 2022 to Jaws 2023 and am experiencing serious sluggishness when browsing with Firefox. I was also unable to activate a combo box to make a selection. It would enter forms mode, but alt-down arrow would not open the combo box. I reloaded Jaws 2022 and all works as it should.

Has anyone experienced either of these problems, and more importantly, can anyone offer any fixes for either of them?

Thanks,
Jeff

JAWS hasn't worked well with Firefox for several years. However, the Firefox nightly builds have new code which provides better performance with JAWS.

Hi David,

I agree that Firefox has been an off-and-on problem for years, which is why I rarely use it, but lately it had worked well for me. Today’s experience was of an entirely new order.

As far as I'm concerned, Firefox hasn't worked well since version 52 ESR, the last version that worked with Webvisum and the only version I now use.  Why can't Mozilla leave well enough alone?  It's bad enough that they screwed up Firefox, but they have also screwed up the latest version of Thunderbird as well, and a lot of TB users have been  complaining on other lists about the loss of first letter navigation and the confusing new interface in the address book.

I don’t use Thunderbird, but I actuallyg ot along great with firefox until very recently – like sometime in the past couple of months. Yes, it became very slow. But I didn’t think this was due to the advent of Quantum. I never used 52 ESR and while it was always slower than chromium-based stuff, it was mostly fine for me, and happily kept it as my default browser.

But sometime around v100 or maybe a version or two after, the slowdown started to become really noticeable. I don’t know what this really has to do with; I noticed it runs a lot faster with uBlock origin extension running, which seems sort of normal (less ads, less tracking, less retrieving data from other sites on the web when you visit a page), but I don’t notice that level of difference with Chrome.

Ah well. I’ll still use firefox from time to time, but not as much as I used to, since any page that’s long and complicated just takes forever and eventually, especially if more than a couple of tabs are open, will grind the pC to a standstill, make screen-reader stop working, etc.

In Chrome I can have 50 tabs open and the damn machine runs pretty much perfectly.

It’s a shame as Firefox is a nicer alternative to chromium-based browsers, but I’m not willing to die on that particular hill.
