moderated Issues with Jaws ndwindows 10,

Hello, I’m hoping someone has some help, I just received a windows 10 laptop through work, and we are running jaws 18.  The issues I’m having are:

1, when hitting alt plus other keys, IE alt+a to go to my explorer favorites, or other similar commands, the command works maybe 25 percent of the time.  Sometimes I have to repeatedly hit the command, and sometimes it just doesn’t work at all.  I’ve not found this with previous versions of windows running jaws 18.

2, the other issue I have is that when I am typing into an edit field, such as a search field on a search engine, or in any other explorer based program, many of the characters I type are not entering into the box.  It’s almost as if there is a lag of some kind.  I will have to go back and add about half the characters I’ve typed back in, as only fragments of words show up in the box.

I’m hoping this makes sense and that someone may have some suggestions.

Thanks,

Kurt

I'd start by grabbing a demo of a newer Jaws version.  Fact is, windows is evolving and using an old jaws on a newer version of windows could cause problems.

If you  are running windows 10 especially the latest versions of windows 10 jaws 18 isn’t going to play well with it. You need to ask your employer for the latest version of Jaws.

I am a federal government employee, so downloading newer versions of jaws unfortunately isn’t an option for me. Are there any possible workaround or is this just something I’m going to have to deal with?   Honestly the worst of the two issues is the alt plus other keystrokes not working. Does anyone know why this would be?

Mario

although you did not specify what version of Windows and JAWS you are using, as Windows 10 continues to receive feature improvements and other updates, older versions of JAWS will gradually stop working as expected.

and it is beneficial to maintain an SMA to be eligible to install the latest versions of JAWS. It is cheaper than paying $400 or more to bring you to the latest version of JAWS because the version you have is not working so well.

If the alt key things are the worst, try an external keyboard to make sure something weird isn't going on with the one on the laptop.  Otherwise, you're going to have to get a newer version of jaws.

Did you ask them to upgrade? I’d be really surprised if they won’t give you the new version of jaws. Especially if it’s interfering with your job.

I’m a former Federal employee, so understand what you are talking about. They have much testing and tweaking to make sure their other software works with the version of JAWS you are getting.

I’m assuming you are working on a laptop rather than a desktop. I ran into something similar to what you are talking about a few years ago when our agency switched to laptops for teleworking. I had to change the keyboard setting to standard or something similar. I honestly don’t remember if it was a JAWS setting or a Windows setting. Perhaps someone else will know how to change the keyboard and can share. Good luck.

Hello Listers,

RE: tele1974@gmail.com

He has been responded to and his situation will not be able to be solved by this list or tech support at Freedom Scientific. The individual works for a Federal Government Agency and the individual does not have Admin Rights so he cannot update the computer no matter if he was able to purchase a one year license to get the latest copy of JAWS and install it. The individual has to speak with his Supervisor and the IT Department to unlock the computer so that he has Admin Rights or get the IT Admin to work with him to resolve the problem he is having.

There is no need to respond to him or the list at this time.

This post sounds ominous. A third party is telling a JAWS user what he can and cannot do to get adequate accessibility in his job, all the while referring to him as "the individual"? Deeply disturbing.

Milton, what I was suggesting below, was him speaking with his employer about getting the $90 subscription. Whether it had to be done through an administrator or himself.

Joseph,
Those of us using JAWS at a company cannot use the annual home license anyway. We have to use the Professional version.

Oh wow, is that so that you can install it on more than three computers or what? Because with the subscription service, you can install it on up to three computers plus if you need to transfer to another computer you can do the exact same thing my dad and I couldn't figure out why I would need the professional version since they pretty much offer the same thing.

JAWS Professional is still a one user license, but Freedoms Scientific says we need to use the professional version if using it in a work setting. There isn't any functional difference, as there used to be in the distinction between Microsoft Office Home and Professional versions. Frankly, I think what it comes down to is a pricing structure. Freedom Scientific is making up part of their revenue from licenses purchased by companies and passing on a savings to personal users who likely don't have the financial resources of a company. That's my hunch. Sure, they can charge all users the same price, but it's a smart thing they are doing to charge less for home users. I'm not sure if they can really tell if someone is using a home license in a professional setting; I figure it is on the honor system and subject to audit, like the IRS auditing your taxes.

Thanks,
Kurt

Oh wow a little ridiculous. I honestly don't think they can tell because they pretty much look the same.

Oh wow, is that so that you can install it on more than three computers or what? Because with the subscription service, you can install it on up to three computers plus if you need to transfer to another computer you can do the exact same thing my dad and I couldn't figure out why I would need the professional version since they pretty much offer the same thing.

Joseph,
Those of us using JAWS at a company cannot use the annual home license anyway. We have to use the Professional version.

Milton, what I was suggesting below, was him speaking with his employer about getting the $90 subscription. Whether it had to be done through an administrator or himself.

If you are running windows 10 especially the latest versions of windows 10 jaws 18 isn’t going to play well with it. You need to ask your employer for the latest version of Jaws.
