Hi all,
I just downloaded the user manual for my external keyboard but I can’t get jaws to read it; all it keeps saying is automatic zoom. I know that pdfs normally have options for zooming in/out but after you get past this you can often read the document. Any ideas as to how I can get Jaws to read this one? I downloaded it off of the website using Firefox as my browser and then saved it on my USB stick and when it opened it opened in Firefox. Using latest versions of Firefox, Jaws and Windows 11. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide me.

Hi,

Open Word, go to open file. Go to the file you want to open. Press enter and wait. A dialog box will pop up telling you that word is converting the pdf to word. Tab to Okay and press it. It might take awhile depending on how large the pdf is.

The issue with doing this is that if there are a lot of graphics, it reads that and even tells you how large they are among other things. If I’ve tried changing in Adobe the accessibility setting to read left to right and top to bottom and it is still not reading it, I close it and use the OCR to Word instead. It seems to clear out the graphics stuff and leave just the text most of the time. Honestly though, I open pdf files on a daily basis and rarely run into this problem. I do have to often tell it how to read it though. For some reason even though that is set as the default in accessibility it doesn’t always seem to keep that as default. Something must override it.

Did you switch the File Type dropdown in the MS-Word Open dialog to PDF?  It won't show up by default, only the MS-Word native format does.  If you want to open any other file type that MS-Word can open, you must select it from the File Type dropdown.

Under Word 2016, PDF, All Files, or All Word Documents choices should allow PDF files to show in the list of files in the Open dialog.  PDF makes it easiest to get rid of all other "clutter" to find what you're looking for.

I believe the default is Word Documents, which will only show files ending in the DOTX extension.  Even older Word Document formats, like DOC, don't show up unless you switch to one of them specifically, or to the All Word Documents or All Files File Type.

Now, open Word into a blank document. Press CTRL+F12 to bring up Open. Press CTRL+V to paste. Press Enter.

Word will now bring up a dialog letting you know that it is converting a PDF file.

The problem, as has been said, is that all the graphics are kept, but if there is any readable text in the PDF, the text will be 100% accurate.

Okay, I got a message saying that it’s having trouble opening the PDF because it exceeds the maximum page size supported by Word. Seems strange but I guess there’s nothing that I can do about it.

It is the next control beyond the File Name edit box.

I strongly suggest you start exploring dialog boxes when someone indicates to you that something is a part of one.  A few seconds of tabbing around will cycle you through all the controls in a dialog box, which you should make a habit of having looked at, at least once, when you're first using them.  There are always controls you need every once in a while that it really helps to know that they're there, and that's how you learn about what's there.
