Sometimes I have to alt tab to get a dialog box to talk during a jaws check for update or when installing a update.

Hello, everyone.
As some of you may remember, I recently purchased a new small laptop
computer to use when attending conferences and when on travel.
The new computer is a Lenovo Yoga laptop, and I did a fresh Jaws 2023
install on it shortly after I received the computer.
I just installed the most recent Jaws 2023 update, but was surprised
that Jaws did not talk me through the instalation process, as it has
done on all of the previous computers I’ve ever owned.
I did the instalation directly from a copy of the executable file
which I had saved onto a thumb drive.
When I hit enter on the executable file, the file opened, and Jaws
said “jaws install”, but nothing else.
I didn’t hear anything about the need to hit the spacebar on “accept
license agreement”, followed by enter.
I got sighted assistance, and was helped through that step, after
which the new Jaws update began to install.
I knew the instalation was occurring because of the clicks you get
during the instalation process.
Once the clicking stopped, I should have heard a message asking me if
I wanted to re-start my computer, but this message was not heard.
Fortunately, I remembered to hit enter at this point, after which the
re-start process started.
Is there something I need to do to get Jaws to talk me through the
update instalation process for future updates?
Once again, the only thing that is different with this computer is
that it is a Windows 11 machine, not Windows 10 like my other two computers.
Thanks for any guidance on this issue.

Just to clarify, I meant that in my experience, alt-tab is the answer. It may not solve it right away. There seems to be a short delay between selecting install and the appearance of the installation dialog, but it's always come up for me.

as far as I remember, they took away the eloquence synthesizer for the temporary copy that runs while an install is taking place using the stand-alone installer.
So if you want to update or install JAWS through a downloaded .exe file, you will always have to resort to Narrator or NVDA to guide you through the installation process.

Nermin
Just installed the latest Jaws from the executable downloaded from the Vispero web site onto my desktop. I am running Windows 11 version 22H2 and all the prompts were spoken as well as the progress.

I'm not trying to be snarky here, but that doesn't sound like progress to me, especially since the elloquence synthesizer talked us through installations prior to this.
Not sure was FS is thinking here.

I'm glad Vispero removed Eloquence from the installation process, but it doesn't mean JAWS fails to speak. In my experience, JAWS is quite verbal during installation. The "agree" box is there to be checked, and I'm notified when installation begins. This current update installed quickly, and so I didn't check for progress. However, if memory serves, I got progress reports by pressing JAWS key-tab. Also, the JAWS cursor provides some information.
I really think people having a problem with getting speech during installation results from a combination of a pause before commencement and wrong timing when pressing alt-tab. Ideally, of course, a user wouldn’t need to use alt-tab, etc. the process should begin with speech. Until then, however, patience combined with alt-tab should do the trick.

Hi Mike, indeed, I don{t think that Vispero had removed Eloquence from the installatio because they would have announced such a off-putting change. I certainly agree with you in the fact that this is a random weirdness. In my case, sometimes Jaws crashes when I’m doing something fairly ordinary and common in the file explorer, let’s say, just creating a new folder or moving files. In my particular case I think that it has something to do with my graphic card or in the worst scenario, with any other component.

I've installed this update on several laptop and desktop computers running both Windows 10 and 11 and I had the spoken help all the way through on all of them. I wonder what is causing this random weirdness?
Take care and stay safe. Mike.
