Moderated Interesting Jaws Updae Issue On New Windows 11 Laptop

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may remember, I recently purchased a new small laptop computer to use when attending conferences and when on travel.

The new computer is a Lenovo Yoga laptop, and I did a fresh Jaws 2023 install on it shortly after I received the computer.

I just installed the most recent Jaws 2023 update, but was surprised that Jaws did not talk me through the instalation process, as it has done on all of the previous computers I’ve ever owned.

I did the instalation directly from a copy of the executable file which I had saved onto a thumb drive.

When I hit enter on the executable file, the file opened, and Jaws said “jaws install”, but nothing else.

I didn’t hear anything about the need to hit the spacebar on “accept license agreement”, followed by enter.

I got sighted assistance, and was helped through that step, after which the new Jaws update began to install.

I knew the instalation was occurring because of the clicks you get during the instalation process.

Once the clicking stopped, I should have heard a message asking me if I wanted to re-start my computer, but this message was not heard.

Fortunately, I remembered to hit enter at this point, after which the re-start process started.

Is there something I need to do to get Jaws to talk me through the update instalation process for future updates?

Once again, the only thing that is different with this computer is that it is a Windows 11 machine, not Windows 10 like my other two computers.

Thanks for any guidance on this issue.

Hey.

I’m not sure as I don’t use new jaws presently. I thought I remembered something about this being normal now? Still, you know you can always run narrator if you need speech/want to know what is happening on screen.

Sometimes I have to alt tab to get a dialog box to talk during a jaws check for update or when installing a update.

It’s been my experience as well since I got this computer. Just do what I do, use NVDA only to install Jaws lol

Yes, that’s certainly true, but my question remains what might have happened with Jaws so that it doesn’t speak normally and guide you through its own instalation process.

Hi Tom,

Why not get the update by going through the help menu of the current version? Also, I’ve noticed that sometimes the window loses focus so I have to use alt tab to get back to it.

Well, Leo, at least I know I’m not alone.

And, now that I know what is or is not happening, I probably could get through another update without sighted assistance or using another screen reader.

I’m thinking of reporting this to Vespero, if that has not already been done.

The rescue app is Narrator. Turn it on with alt+windows+enter. It can talk you through the times when JAWS doesn't.

I just installed the latest update I think it was this past Monday, and it behaved like every other update I've seen in at least the past ten years. I got all the prompts I was expecting--a new version is available, blah blah blah, I checked the box and pressed enter, it downloaded, I got the install screen, I pressed the install button, it did its thing, but this time it did not prompt me to restart JAWS or reboot the computer. I did so anyway, just in case.

I updated with windows 11 and JAWS spoke all the prompts.

Hello Tom,
I just updated my Windows 11 machine and although JAWS did not speak
the progress of the install, JAWS did have me accept the license
agreement and the update went as normal.
The next time this occurs on your computer, I would suggest
pressing JAWS key with b (the speak dialog command). This keystroke
did speak the progress to me in addition to making the clicks during
installation. You could also have tried to refresh/update the screen
(JAWS key with escape) which may have been useful at the time when you
did not hear the accept license agreement box.

Hi Tom,

This might be something to contact a tech at Vispero about.

I’ve always had better luck with Jaws updates by using the executable file, rather than going through the help system.

And, as I said in an earlier post, trying the alt tab was the first thing I thought to do when experiencing the issue I described, but unfortunately, that did not solve the lack of speech issue.

Hi Tom,

Why not get the update by going through the help menu of the current version? Also, I’ve noticed that sometimes the window loses focus so I have to use alt tab to get back to it.

Steve:

Just out of curiosity, were you doing this on a Windows 11 PC?

My new PC has Windows 11.

I’ve never seen this behavior before on previous Windows operating systems.

And, now that I know what is or is not happening, I probably could get through another update without sighted assistance or using another screen reader.

I’m thinking of reporting this to Vespero, if that has not already been done.

It’s been my experience as well since I got this computer. Just do what I do, use NVDA only to install Jaws lol
