Moderated How To Configure Lenovo Laptop to re-boot From A Shutdown Via The Power Button
Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.
I just discovered an interesting problem with my new Lenovo Yoga Windows 11 laptop.
I can shut the computer down normally, but it automatically re-boots when I lift up the lid.
I don’t know if this is possible, but I’d like to change things so that once shut down, the only way the computer can be re-booted is by physically turning on the power button.
My sighted wife and I have checked, and we can’t seem to find the appropriate setting to make this happen.
I guess I can get used to the idea that the computer will automatically re-boot when I open the lid, but I do like the ability to manually control things, especially since I have no shut-down sound to let me know for sure that the computer is truly shut down.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Tom,
I'm sorry I can't give you exact steps since I'm not at
our house where I have a Win11 22H2 computer set-up, but if you do a search for
power options and tab you will see a few different settings that you can press
enter on to see your choices. We'll be back home tomorrow morning PST time
and if necessary I can send specific steps if you need them. This is only
a settings thing, not anything weird like updating jaws! LOL
Take care and stay safe. Mike. ----- Original Message -----

I'm Louie, a Microsoft Community member and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. Hope you're doing well and safe there. It seems that your laptop hibernates when you close its lid. This feature terminates running processes on your machine since it allows the system to use very little power. If Do nothing is already selected for Choose what closing the lid does in Power Options, let's try to make hibernation unavailable. Follow these steps: Right-click on the Windows icon on your home screen. Select Command Prompt (Admin). Click Yes if you get a prompt window. Type powercfg.exe /hibernate off then press Enter. See if this will prevent the laptop from hibernating when you close the lid. Hope this helps. -- end article -- It may be worth a try hth, TJ On 2/18/2023 12:37 AM, Tom Behler wrote:

Tom,
The search window is not the same as the run
window.
To execute a command, you need windows +
R.

Hi Tom, I have a braille display and I’ve noticed that these laptops take awhile to shut down sometimes. It isn’t instantly, although Jaws stops speaking. If my display is not on, I give it about 30 seconds before closing the lid. This seems to help with that issue for me.
Have you looked under power options? I remember seeing something about that, but it was buried deep in there.

Hi, Tom. I came in late on this thread. What is it, exactly, that you want to do? Are you trying to make it so that, when you press the power button, it shuts down, instead of going into hibernate mode (fast startup)? Or are you actually wanting your computer to reboot when you press the power button instead of shutting down? If the latter, you probably won't like it, because if, every time you push the bower button, the computer restarts, you'll need to hold the power button down for about two seconds, every time you want the computer to actually shut down. This would be bad for Windows, because when you perform a forced shutdown, Windows doesn't shut down properly.
If you just want to disable hibernate mode, I could help you if you call me today. I'll be available except between 3:00 PM, and 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time, today, as I will be in a Zoom meeting for those two hours.

Hi, Brian. I suspect that this behavior of starting when the lid is opened is a mechanical pressure switch in the hinge of the laptop, or it is something optical that is triggered when the lid is opened. I also suspect that they think this is a convenience, and have not made it a configurable option.

I looked under power options, but couldn’t find anything readily apparent that would do what I want to do.
Once again, I’d like to be able to re-boot the computer via the on-off power button.
I sure wish we could get the shut-down sound back somehow!

Glenn:
I tried the powercfg.exe /hibernate off command using windows R, and the computer still comes back on after shutting down and when opening the lid again.
I guess another command is needed, and I can’t seem to find the appropriate setting in settings.

Tom, The search window is not the same as the run window. To execute a command, you need windows + R. HTH. Glenn ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Behler Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2023 8:43 AM Subject: Re: How To Configure Lenovo Laptop to re-boot From A Shutdown Via The Power Button

When I put powercfg.exe/hibernateoff into the windows search box as you suggest, I’m taken to search results in Microsoft Edge, rather than having the computer turn hybernation off.
Not sure why this is.
Any further guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks!

The Windows command prompt lists the fundamental syntax building blocks for this if one enters “shutdown/?” (without quotation marks) in the command line. Additional shutdown options It is not mandatory that you rely on the command prompt in order to shut down Windows in different ways. Shutdown routines can also be initiated via a script (batch file) which immediately runs the desired commands without a CMD call-up. One can easily create these types of files with the Windows Text Editor notepad, save them as a *.bat file and launch them via mouse click. Example file name: Shut off_PC.bat @echo off shutdown /s /t 20 When creating and testing batch files, there are a few things to keep in mind. In this video the necessary preparations are thoroughly demonstrated: In order to protect your privacy, the video will not load until you click on it. Hi, Brian. I suspect that this behavior of starting when the lid is opened is a mechanical pressure switch in the hinge of the laptop, or it is something optical that is triggered when the lid is opened. I also suspect that they think this is a convenience, and have not made it a configurable option.

Hey there,Bill, BZ here, Tom wants to set his laptop up so that he can start the machine by just pushing the power button rather than having the machine start when you open the lid. My new Lenovo ideapad laptops for Kathy and I require you to push the power button to start them as our dell inspiron 5502 laptops with windws ten start up when the lid is raised and I’d love to get that changed if I could. I’ve set it so that when I close the lid mine doesn’t shut down but haven’t figured out how to get it to start with just the power button. BZ!
