Moderated How To Configure Lenovo Laptop to re-boot From A Shutdown Via The Power Button

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I just discovered an interesting problem with my new Lenovo Yoga Windows 11 laptop.

I can shut the computer down normally, but it automatically re-boots when I lift up the lid.

I don’t know if this is possible, but I’d like to change things so that once shut down, the only way the computer can be re-booted is by physically turning on the power button.

My sighted wife and I have checked, and we can’t seem to find the appropriate setting to make this happen.

I guess I can get used to the idea that the computer will automatically re-boot when I open the lid, but I do like the ability to manually control things, especially since I have no shut-down sound to let me know for sure that the computer is truly shut down.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Tom,

I'm sorry I can't give you exact steps since I'm not at our house where I have a Win11 22H2 computer set-up, but if you do a search for power options and tab you will see a few different settings that you can press enter on to see your choices.  We'll be back home tomorrow morning PST time and if necessary I can send specific steps if you need them.  This is only a settings thing, not anything weird like updating jaws!  LOL

Take care and stay safe.  Mike.

Hi there!

I'm Louie, a Microsoft Community member and a fellow Windows 10 user like you. Hope you're doing well and safe there.
It seems that your laptop hibernates when you close its lid. This feature terminates running processes on your machine since it allows the system to use
very little power. If Do nothing is already selected for Choose what closing the lid does in Power Options, let's try to make hibernation unavailable.
Follow these steps:

Right-click on the Windows icon on your home screen.
Select Command Prompt (Admin).
Click Yes if you get a prompt window.
Type powercfg.exe /hibernate off then press Enter.

See if this will prevent the laptop from hibernating when you close the lid.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if there is a switch for that, like /r
for restart.
There's usually a space between a command and a switch.

Hi Tom,

I have a braille display and I’ve noticed that these laptops take awhile to shut down sometimes. It isn’t instantly, although Jaws stops speaking. If my display is not on, I give it about 30 seconds before closing the lid. This seems to help with that issue for me.

Have you looked under power options? I remember seeing something about that, but it was buried deep in there.

Karen

Click Yes if you get a prompt window.
Type powercfg.exe /hibernate off then press Enter.

See if this will prevent the laptop from hibernating when you close the lid.

Hope this helps.

I don’t know, glenn.

I guess I’ll just live with the issue for now, or until I can come up with the right command.

It surprises me how hard this is to accomplish.

I wonder if there is a switch for that, like /r

for restart.

There's usually a space between a command and a switch.

I have a braille display and I’ve noticed that these laptops take awhile to shut down sometimes. It isn’t instantly, although Jaws stops speaking. If my display is not on, I give it about 30 seconds before closing the lid. This seems to help with that issue for me.

Hi, Tom. I came in late on this thread. What is it, exactly, that you want to do? Are you trying to make it so that, when you press the power button, it shuts down, instead of going into hibernate mode (fast startup)? Or are you actually wanting your computer to reboot when you press the power button instead of shutting down? If the latter, you probably won't like it, because if, every time you push the bower button, the computer restarts, you'll need to hold the power button down for about two seconds, every time you want the computer to actually shut down. This would be bad for Windows, because when you perform a forced shutdown, Windows doesn't shut down properly.

If you just want to disable hibernate mode, I could help you if you call me today. I'll be available except between 3:00 PM, and 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time, today, as I will be in a Zoom meeting for those two hours.

Lenovo also has their advantage app where some of the settings might be. I just discovered it a week ago. I wonder if it is in there. I’m with you about the shutdown tone. I miss it too.

Here is some useful shutdown info that Tom and others might be interested in, info is below the link to the page:

table with 2 columns and 5 rows
shutdown /s
Shut down PC immediately
shutdown /a
Abort shutdown
shutdown /r
Restart computer
shutdown /l
Log off current user
shutdown /f
Force shutdown: forces the running application to close (the user receives no advance warning)
table end
These commands function immediately. In other words, without any further formulation. Sophisticated shutdown procedures require a more comprehensive syntax.
Some examples:
shutdown /s /t 20
Shuts down local PC in 20 seconds (time specification with “/t-Parameter” is freely selectable)
shutdown /r /m \\Computername
Restarts a remote PC (preparation may be required: assignment of access rights for remote control, change of Firewall settings)
shutdown /r /m \\Computername /c “comment”
Restarts a remotely-operated PC (the text behind the “/c-Parameter” appears in a blue text box on the screen of the addressed target PC)
Example: Restart the local PC after 20 seconds
The local PC is shut down by an active user account in 20 seconds. The user account has the designation “Peter”:
An example for a simple shutdown command, which brings about a time-delayed shutdown. figure
Shutdown via CMD: code example
An example for a simple shutdown command, which brings about a time-delayed shutdown.
An example for a simple shutdown command, which brings about a time-delayed shutdown. figure end
Example: the forced restart of a remote PC after one minute
A remote computer [MY REMOTE PC] is supposed to be shutdown remotely after 60 seconds. In the countdown phase of the shutdown, a text box with the comment
“Please finish your work” is supposed to be shown. The following syntax implements the task:
shutdown /s /m \\[MY REMOTE PC] /t 60 /c "Please finish your work"
When formulating the syntax, the selected placeholder [MY REMOTE PC] should be completely (including square brackets) using one’s own data. With the comment,
the quotation marks shown above must be placed at the front and back.
Example of a complex shutdown syntax. A remotely-operated PC is shut down with a delay. figure
Shutdown via CMD: Example with more complex syntax
Example of a complex shutdown syntax. A remotely-operated PC is shut down with a delay.
Example of a complex shutdown syntax. A remotely-operated PC is shut down with a delay. figure end
If the command is successfully run, this standard Windows display appears on the screen of the remotely-operated PC, accompanied by the desired comment:
“Please finish your work”:

Shutdown via CMD: message example on the REMOTE PC
Blue text box on the remote PC after remote-controlled shutdown via command line.

Ambitious users of Windows shutdown commands can define highly complex procedures for very specific purposes. The Windows command prompt lists the fundamental
syntax building blocks for this if one enters “shutdown/?” (without quotation marks) in the command line.
Additional shutdown options
It is not mandatory that you rely on the command prompt in order to shut down Windows in different ways. Shutdown routines can also be initiated via a
script (batch file) which immediately runs the desired commands without a CMD call-up. One can easily create these types of files with the Windows Text
Editor notepad, save them as a *.bat file and launch them via mouse click.
Example file name: Shut off_PC.bat
@echo off
shutdown /s /t 20
When creating and testing batch files, there are a few things to keep in mind. In this video the necessary preparations are thoroughly demonstrated:
In order to protect your privacy, the video will not load until you click on it.
Another option for initiating a shutdown in the shortest way possible is the Windows shortcut. After right-clicking on the Windows Desktop, a menu opens,
then click “New” followed by “Shortcut”.
Create shutdown shortcut: Display after a right mouse-click on the Windows Desktop. figure
Shutdown command via Windows shortcut
Create shutdown shortcut: Display after a right mouse-click on the Windows Desktop.
Create shutdown shortcut: Display after a right mouse-click on the Windows Desktop. figure end
The opening entry window can also handle code. A shutdown shortcut on the desktop is quickly produced:
list of 4 items
• enter “shutdown /s /t 20” (without quotation marks)
• click on “Next”
• assign a meaningful name
• end the process with “Finish”
list end
A click on the shortcut then shuts down the PC with a 20-second delay.

Tom,

The search window is not the same as the run window.

To execute a command, you need windows + R.

TJ:

When I put powercfg.exe/hibernateoff into the windows search box as you suggest, I’m taken to search results in Microsoft Edge, rather than having the computer turn hybernation off.

Not sure why this is.

Any further guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks!
