Subject: google docs with JAWS: next steps
Hi,
1. I use JAWS 2022, with MS Edge and Chrome.
2. I have to work with a Google Doc which has a table with 4/5 columns and hundreds of rows.
3. I have to review comments left in bubbles and leave my own revisions/comments in the buble.
4. What is the best way to do that.
5. I typically download the document into Word and do the needful, as I struggle with Google docs. but this creates version control issues.
6. How can I smoothly move from one row to the other, as up and down arrow keys do not work well?
7. How can I effectively access the content of a bubble comment?
*. WHat should I do if the comments/revisions from my end are not getting inserted. As in, if the keystrokes for the same are not yielding any result. Change my keyboard language?

Rahul, There are some lists of keyboard shortcuts out there for Google Docs. Also, do you have the Be My Eyes app on your phone? If so, Google is one of the options for specialized service. I called them once when I couldn’t figure out how to switch between Google Accounts and the rep was able to get me straightened out. It’s a little tricky, as you have to hold your phone so they can see your screen, but it’s an option.

Hi Rahul,
To insert a comment in a Google doc, press control+alt+m.
In order for your revisions to show as revisions instead of just being inserted as text, you need to go into suggesting mode which is in the view menu, mode sub-menu. There is a keystroke to turn on suggesting mode but I can’t recall what it is.
You have a couple of ways to navigate by comment/revision. If you press JAWS key+space, followed by g, you’ll be in the Google Docs keystrokes layer. Pressing c and shift c will navigate you to the next and previous comment or suggestion, pressing s will read out the comment/suggestion. I don’t know why just pressing c doesn’t do that, but that only moves you to the relevant one.
To reply to a comment, press control+alt+e, and keeping control+alt held down, then press c. You can also read the comment this way.
If the JAWS layered command isn’t working effectively to navigate by comment – apparently it doesn’t sometimes though I’ve never had a problem, you can press control+alt+n, and again keeping control+alt held down, pres c to navigate to the next comment. If you replace n with p in that previous command, you’ll go to the previous comment.
I have found that the keyboard layout needs to be set to English US for Google Docs shortcuts and JAWS layered commands to work properly. With the UK keyboard which I would ordinarily use, stray accented characters get inserted on occasion instead of commands being executed.
In terms of navigating the table, try the JAWS table commands control+alt+relevant arrow key.
Cheers,
Ed
