Moderated getting started with Focus 14

Van Lant, Robin

I just bought a used Focus 14.  I’m a bit intimidated, but am hoping this is a good way to practice my Braille skills. Is the documentation that comes with it the best or do you have a better podcast, webinar or tutorial that you find helpful? This is my first Braille display.  Sounds like I can use it on my laptop running JAWS 2023 and also with my iPhone.  Where should I start for  the easiest beginner  experience?

I don’t know about alternative training formats, but to start with you could begin using the scratch pad. It’s much like notepad on a laptop and that its capabilities are very limited. But it’s a good place to start for basic braille writing practice. The one upside to the website version of the manual is that the table of contents  contains  links to the various sections, like the one for the scratch pad, that can be clicked on to take you right to that section. This is what I did when learning to use the 14 cell before moving on to the 40 cell version.

There are also some training videos on their youtube channel. Also, there are some on ACB community events in their podcast section.

The way I got started was to try to use it with  my computer. This way I had Jaws as a backup to what I was reading on my display. Then I started learning the keys to perform things like alt f4 to close a window, control a to select all, control c to copy, etc and started using those. I’m not proficient with it, but I’m getting better.

After I learned some of that, I started using the scratchpad to take notes or to read txt files.

Thank you all for the advice.   I’ve downloaded the PDF  and will bookmark that HTML version.  I’ll also go look or the videos.    Scott Davert did an overview on Braille displays and IOS in  last year, but he was jumping between various displays, so I might get confused.  Glad to see FS had a guide specific to IOS on the site, but I’ll follow everyone’s advice and start with it on the laptop and JAWS.   So, so glad you all told me the tutorial is on the FS site, as I only got a Braille guide in the box and my Braille skills are definitely not good enough to make sense of that.

With gratitude,

Robin

Hello,
JAWS also has a braille study mode that one can activate when a
braille display is connected. See the below link on this:
https://support.freedomscientific.com/teachers/lessons/8.7_BrailleStudyMode.htm
If you are looking for training, companies/agencies like mine can
also provide that (see below in the signature line).
