moderated Excel for dummies help
Morey Worthington
Evening all.
Using Excel 2007, Jaws 2022, Windows 10. I go into excel document, go into cell, and want to edit a certain letter in that cell. I press the f2 key and it say edit. All is good. I press the home key to get to front of text and using the number pad it says...what ever key is there. Now the issue. How in the heck do I get to the letter I want to change?? I press the f6 key to go next letter and nothing happens. So, how do I get to whatever letter I want to change, edit, and then edit it?? I am really lost on this one. Remember, Excel for dummies. Thanks. What I am after is what keystrokes to move aroung in edit field, and if done, press the escape key to get out of it or???? Thanks -- Morey Worthington

Let me change word in my message, I press the numberpad 6 key, not the F6 key to get to next letter.
Sorry -- Morey Worthington

The left and right arrow keys should move you around in the text box; just like in a text editor. When finished, press enter. The text box will close and you'll be put down to the next row in the same column.

Hi howard.
I opened the cell using the f2 key and again it says edit. Using the left or right arrow keys does nothing. If i press the home key, then press the number 5 key it says the first letter but if I press the number 6 key to go to next letter....nothing. Any other thoughts. A while back there was a tip about going into options, into advanced andturn off allow editing in cells which I did do. Should I then go back into settings and make it allow changes? The real editing keys should work: left, right, home, end, etc. I've had your same problem sometimes; my solution has been to reload my screen reader. Beyond that, I'm afraid I can't help. Sorry.

Morey, when I had that kind of problem, I maximized the window by pressing alt+spacebar and then x, or another way is to press Windows+up arrow. I also found that pressing alt+dash maximized, I think it's called, the working area or something similar. give it a try and do write back if these keystrokes helped or not.

Good Thought but no good. I did max the xcreen, and also restarted Jaws 2022/ but nothing got the numpad 6 key to work or move to the next character.
One thing that might help, or not, after opening the cell, using the F2 key, pressing the home key, pressing the numpad 5 key does say the first letter. If I press the delete key on that letter it does bring up the next letter to delete and so on. I can then insert whatever needed and press the enter key and all is well. But sure would sure like the numpad 6 key to highlight the next letter so that it can then be changed. HMMMMMM Thanks for input so far and good thoughts. -- Morey Worthington

Instead of the numpad key what happens if you use the regular arrow
keys in the shape of a t, not the numpad keys? On Sun, 16 Jan 2022 13:10:45 -0500, Morey Worthington wrote: -- Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. The question is: How do you spend it? John Covici wb2una covici@...

Why not use the arrow keys instead? Also, it might help to toggle the num lock function on and then back off.

same thing, meaning no key response at all
I tried using the jaws/1 to get key help and it says move to next character and move back to prior character in both cases, meaning in the arrow keys and on the numpad. This is really confusing. Might have to call tech tomorrow and maybe they can help. -- Morey Worthington

Will give the numlock thing a try.
In a given cell if there is a formula, the jaws/ctr/f2 keystrokes will read formula, but, again, if try to edit the formula using f2 key, cannot get it to move to any certain character. -- Morey Worthington

I tried this on my computer, and it is working for me. I am using the latest versions of Office and JAWS running on Windows 10. I can edit the formula by pressing F2 and using the arrow keys to navigate. Curtis

Hi Morey, You mentioned that you are using Excel 2007. I am pretty sure that is your problem. As recently as Office 2016, reading characters inside Excel often misbehaved in the ways you describe. Upgrading to Office 365 or 2021 would almost certainly solve your problem. David David

Hello Morey:

In Excel, check the Options > Advanced dialog to see if allow editing directly in cells is checked. In extremis this is what I would do barring simply upgrading to the most current version of Excel. Kindly, Curtis Chong

Morey, If I remember right and you are the one having trouble editing in a cell in Excel, than you want to uncheck that box that says Allow editing in a cell. I know that this sounds strange, but it will work.

Hi Marty and all.
I did go to see if it was unchecked, it was not, so I unchecked it. No Help. I did contact Jaws Help desk, and they told me Excel was no longer supported by them or even Microsoft. So I went back to Jaws 2020, or 2018, and they both still work with Office 2007, meaning all the keystrokes still work for me , at least. My questions and all of the help given me will just have to be put away for now. Will keep working in Excel with Old Excel, and Old Jaws for now. Thanks all. -- Morey Worthington
