moderated drag and drop with jaws

Hi.

Trying to learn how to do a drag and drop with JAWS.  I’ve opened a folder with some files in it.  Pressed Control + Insert + Numpad slash and I get that drag and drop and to move the PC cursor, JAWS cursor or touch pad to the location where I want to drop.  When I move to another folder, and press the same keystrokes I get an error JAWS saying the drag and drop isn’t found and it might be covered by another window then the drag and drop action is canceled.

Any ideas what I am doing incorrectly?

Thanks

JIm

Was wondering if anyone has knowledge if Spark Instant Messenger is compatible with JAWS 2018?

Thanks

If you simply want to move files from one folder to another, just open the folder with the files, go to the one you want or select multiple files which are next to each other by holding down shift and using the arrow keys, then press Control + X to cut, go to the other folder and press Control + V to paste.

If you have multiple files and they are not next to each other go to the first one, then hold down the control key and arrow down (best to use list view or details view so all the files are in a vertical list), then whenever you get to a file you want to select press the spacebar without letting go of the control key, then arrow down again to the next file. When done repeat the above, control + x to cut and control + v in the other folder to paste.

Drag and drop works on the Windows 10 taskbar very nicely if you want to change the order the icons there are in, but it does not work in all situations where maybe a sighted person can drag and drop with the mouse, but in most cases other keyboard shortcuts like cut and paste will do just the same.

Hi James,

The problem with drag and drop is, that both windows have to be visible
on screen and as a jaws user you not always no this.

I hate the way MS keeps messing up keyboard commands! I cant get to the app bar with the old method and cant seem to find a way to do it. but if you can get focus on the app bar then right click you can arrange windows in several ways. This makes all windows visible so drag and drop should work but as this is win 10 who knows.

I still wonder why a blind person would want to use such a visual way to move files from one folder to another when cut and paste works perfectly well and allows you to do 1 file or many all at once.

If drag and drop is the only way to accomplish something as in the example I gave about rearranging the order of icons on the taskbar then it’s OK to use it and it works very well for that, but if there is a keyboard shortcut which is easy and fast then why not use it.

The one thing I have learned over the years is, some like to do things the hard way and some just don’t want to let go of past ways of doing things.  They insist on using their vision when using a screen reader is much more efficient.

Makes some sense. So sounds like doing drag and drop of say a loose file in the documents folder as an example into a subfolder in the same larger folder creates the error I described.

Sieghard. I totally get your comment about using cut and paste. The gentleman I am working with knows about that but seems to be taking a class where they want him to learn about Drag and drop. I know...

Thanks Marten and Sieghard. Appreciate it!

Exactly, if I can move a "loose file" as you describe it into a subfolder in about 5 seconds by pressing Control + X, going to the subfolder and pressing Control + V then I'd tell any sighted instructor who told me he wanted me to use drag and drop to throw away his mouse the next time he uses the computer. To try and teach a blind person to do things the way sighted people do stuff is a joke just as it would be a joke.

Hi Sieghard,

He is taking a computer class where part of the curriculum apparently involves learning drag and drop. I agree copy or cut and paste is the way to go.  I shared this with A person with DSS.  The point being can he take a loose file and put it in a folder as an example?  A person with vision has several ways to try to accomplish this, but a screen reader less ways, but still effective.  My concern is the cut and paste way will be counted incorrect since. He didn’t drag and drop.

Thanks again for your help and thoughtful response.

In Windows 10 I can easily and efficiently move any item on the taskbar to any position I want using the Jaws drag and drop function.

I go to the icon I want to move and press Jaws Key + Control + NumPad Slash

Then I arrow to where I want to drop the item and repeat the keystroke and the item is moved.

If I arrow right then the item I am on when I drop the first item is pushed to the left and if I drag an item to the left then the item I drop it on is pushed to the right.

I too find this quite useful. However, the Taskbar is the only place I use the drag and drop function.

I go to the icon I want to move and press Jaws Key + Control + NumPad Slash

Exactly. The moving files example is one that easily comes to mind, but there are various assessments, surveys, and things which want you to rank a list of items some way, or to categorize them.

Hi James,

The problem with drag and drop is, that both windows have to be visible on screen and as a jaws user you not always no this.

I’m sure there is a key combination to activate drag and drop if you are using the laptop keyboard layout, but I never have used it so you have to figure that one out. I assume you can probably find it in the Jaws help menu under keyboard shortcuts.

Alternatively, you could always bring up command search, type drag into the edit field and tab once where Drag and Drop is the first choice and you can activate it that way.

You would have to try if it works, I had a survey like that once and there were buttons which allowed you to move items up and down the list. This would maybe be more of a function of how the survey/website is coded and whether it was made accessible.
